Battery Charging??

Canon BP-511A battery (EOS 20D)

I've read the manual and it tells me that my battery should be charged for 100mins + an other hour once the light is perminently lit.

As it is a new battery which hasn't been charged before, should I treat it like a mobile phone battery and leave it on charge for atleast 16-18 hours for it's first charge or only what the manual says?

Silly question, but just want to double check as everyone says something different and, what a suprise, no service centre or help line is open!
