Bas Leinders, Optimum's manager, tells about the preparation and expectations from the first round of GT Open 2020.
This is the third weekend in a row in three different championships for Optimum Motorsport. How did you prepare for this first International GT Open meeting? The decision of our drivers to compete in the GT Open with the McLaren came relatively late, but due to the lack of competition, we were still able to take part in several days of testing. All four drivers are new to GT Open, so we tried to put some training on pit stop procedures. This is something that is often underestimated, everyone wants to go fast on the track, but one can win or lose so much time in the way of the stands. You have two cars in Pro-Am with drivers arriving from the GT4… These guys are ambitious, even with very little or almost no racing experience for Nick and Brendan who decided to switch to GT3. I think at Optimum Motorsport, we have the perfect environment to help them in the best way possible. We have been very familiar with the championship for two years and we are sure that they will enjoy it all. The weather looks hot in Budapest this weekend. Is this a handicap for your drivers? Although air conditioning is available in race cars, it's still very hot in the cabin. Remember that driving a race car is physically very demanding because even professional drivers, who train almost every day, can sometimes have difficulties in these conditions. Pilots will need to make sure that they have enough rest before the weekend, closely monitor everything they eat and drink during the week. What will be your main opponents ? There are a lot of good teams and crews in the championship, but if you have to name one, there is no doubt that Teo Martin Motorsport remains a reference in GT Open. They narrowly missed the title last year and they also have a McLaren 720S GT3. They, like us, will be extremely motivated to get on the podium and bring the cup home. We will push as much as possible, but we must remain realistic for this first event. The main goal will be to finish the races without any problems and that our drivers take as much experience as possible. |

This weekend in Hungaroring will be dry and windy. The maximum temperature will reach 31-33° C. While the track temperature reaches 45°.

Down to 18 cars for the weekend, after Teo couldn't arrange a last minute partner for Christian Hahn. Expectation is that this car will join the second round

The Mercedes-AMG GT3/HTP Winward Motorsport of Nico Bastian and Markus Sattler was the fastest in the FP1 session in Hungaroring. With a better time of 1.42.587, Nico Bastian overtook the Ferrari 488 GT3/AF Corse of Vincent Abril and Louis Prette by 0.118 s. Third time was made by the Mercedes/Getspeed Performance by Schiller/Max. Two McLaren 720S GT3 / Teo Martin Motorsport followed leaders in the standings with Chaves / Ramos and Khodair / Hahn.

It seems that they could attract Fran Rueda, who is not busy. If you don't take into account the tests at the beginning of the summer. They could be a good example. Even if the chances of winning the championship would be small. This pair could bring heat.

Stéphane Ortelli will be back at the wheel at the next International GT Open round next week-end at the Circuit Paul Ricard. He will sub Philippe Prette, who is taken by professional commitments, alongside Angelo Negro in the AF Corse APM Monaco Ferrari 488, entered in Pro-Am for this occasion.

Provisional entry list for 2nd round revealed. It sees absence of entries by Getspeed (Schiller-Max), ARC Bratislava and 2 cars by polish Olimp Racing. Total number os cars - 15. It's terrifying.

15 is nothing GT Open hasnt seen before. They had lower grid counts than that for almost the whole season just a few years ago. Not in any way suprising given the current situation

- AF Corse #17 walks with a quiet tread to the Overall title. Abril is fast and knows the Ferrari 488 GT3 very well, while L. Prette continues to progress.
- Henrique Chaves and Miguel Ramos are their main rivals. Chaves had following Abril for a first half of the race. But his McLaren started to slide because of losing of mechanical grip (my supposition). Ramos should be more confident - C. Hahn is good substitution for Allam Khodair - Team Lazarus Bentley is still getting to know the new car and its features. In Hungary they studied the degradation of the tires because they did not have empirical data for Hungaroring (in the words of Yannick Mettler). On Friday, car # 26 experienced problems with the hydraulic steering system. In Saturday's race, they had an electronic traction control problem (#26) and overheating (#28). In theory, they can impose a championship fight on two obvious leaders. - TF Sport is fast, when Charlie "Clint" Eastwood is behind the wheel… Salih looks like Am driver. |

Their car is ranked as Pro. This means that both drivers are Pro. Otherwise, it should be Pro-Am. |

GT Open don’t entirely rank entries on driver ratings. Ramos is also a paying Am driver but a very quick one. I think no one would be surprised at Abril’s speed if you’ve watched any GT races in the past 4-5 years |

So this weekend GT Open merged the GT3 & GT Cup grids due to poor entries, something which is wanted for a while, despite this there were still only 17 entries. Hopefully things improve.
2021 calendar released, no Silverstone round again. http://www.gtopen.net/en/news/3895/g...-race-calendar |

The GT Open Cup has been boring racing with small grids since its inception. I think it makes sense to add it to the main series while numbers are low. GT Open does well usually for race by race entries, and the current climate makes that harder, so they seem to be taking a hit. Despite the low grid counts the racing is still good, and I dont doubt grids will grow again next year. RE: silverstone, big shame, but I think Brexit may have something to do with it, the WEC isnt doing a UK round either, and GTWC havent announced Silverstone yet. Its not looking like us Brits will get to see much International GT sportscar racing on home soil in 21. Currently only the GTWC Sprint races at Brands scheduled |

Some interesting facts about forthcoming race 2 at Spa-Francorchamps. Finally Teo Martin Motorsport began to combine stints Vincent Abril and Henrique Chaves. In the first race, they raced at the same time. Obviously, for TMM, the best match-up is Ramos-Prette and Abril-Chaves at the same time on track.
Then the Portuguese (obviously, by the team's decision) allowed Al-Harty to pass himself in third place, so as not to get a 10-second handicap. Thus, he lost points, allowed the Monegasques one point in the overall standings, but avoided a handicap. And today, he almost took pole, but his time was deleted. |

Well, Teo Martin Motorsport's tactics worked. After avoiding a handicap after yesterday's race, Chaves maintained his position in the battle with Eastwood in the first half of the race, and in the second Ramos did not lose his lead. Thanks to his experience, he quickly and successfully overtook GT4/GTC.
Now the advantage of Chaves and Ramos over Prette and Abril is 8 points. Miguel Ramos dedicated his victory to the father of his former team-mate and current rival Fabrizio Crestani. His father is in the hospital. Meanwhile, Vincent Abril broke the record at Spa-Francorcamps for GT3 and even GTE cars. Last edited by Wilter Will; 18 Oct 2020 at 13:37. |

http://www.gtopen.net/en/news/3921/p...-vincent-abril Well that got my attention. The all time GT lap record at Spa set by a Ferrari 488.....GT3 car. Well that aspect of GT "Open" is good. As they let the cars run to their best ability rather than use BoP. I still think the series would be better if they allow GTE cars to run. I recommend they do this for 2021. |

And more, GT Open also has a BoP, but it is calculated differently (not like SRO). I hope, you understood my English. |
