Press release
Kovalainen takes second F3 victory Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen took his second victory of the season in the Avon Tyres British F3 Championship at Snetterton today, Saturday. The Finn’s Fortec Motorsport Dallara Renault won by eight-tenths off a second in a dramatic race that started with a first corner clash between front row drivers James Courtney and Robbie Kerr in their Dallara Mugen Hondas. The two touched at the first corner with both spinning off the circuit and both blaming the other! The incident put Richard Antinucci into the lead for a lap until Heikki Kovalainen outdragged him across the start and finish line and dived through at the start of the lap. Once clear Kovalainen built up an advantage as Antinucci fended off Alan van der Merwe who had relieved Bruce Jouanny of third place. Van der Merwe tried to find a way past Antinucci but the defensive American kept van der Merwe at bay, the South African then dropping back into the clutches of Bruce Jouanny. Jouanny was elevated to third when van der Merwe’s driveshaft let go, but Kovalainen’s lead was eroded towards the end of the race when he was caught out by a dirty track and it took a lap to clean the tyres. This allowed Antinucci to close but the Finn put his head down and pull clear again, with Antinucci second and Jouanny third. A delighted Kovalainen said: "I got a tow off Richard and he gave me room. It was an easy move to do, but it was a scary lap when I found the dirt." Antinucci celebrated his best finish of the year but felt he could have won. "If you hold your line on the straights here you can keep your position and if I had done that I reckon I could have won. Second is not so bad, though." Behind Jouanny came Fabio Carbone’s Fortec Motorsport Dallara Renault and Ronnie Bremer took fifth for Manor Motorsport after a clash with team-mate Mark Taylor put the Brit our with damage on lap 12. Sixth fell to Adam Carroll who won the Scholarship Class comfortably, ahead of Clivio Piccione and Stephen Colbert who ran nose-to-tail for most of the race. And after his first corner spin, Courtney recovered to take ninth overall and seventh in class to extend his lead over an annoyed Kerr. "I had to turn in for the corner," explained Kerr, "but James went straight into the side of me," Courtney now leads Kerr by six points with the next two races taking place at Snetterton tomorrow. |
