Edmonton, Alberta
This, from ChampWeb...
A permanent road course to be built in Edmonton on the grounds of Northlands. Northlands Park built, maintains, operates and owns each of the following facilities on behalf of the citizens of Edmonton and North Central Alberta _ Skyreach Centre (home of the Edmonton Oilers), Northlands AgriCom (a large convention center), Northlands Spectrum (horse racing), Northlands Sportex (an older hall), and the Silver Slipper(bar/casino). A group of people have approximately $18 Million for the development of the track. The track will consist of 1.3 mile driving school course and a longer 2 mile course. Track is slated to open in 2005. The track is to be 40 feet wide with 80 feet on the front straight. I assume that includes the pit lane. And here is where this rumor gets interesting: Track will be a FIA licenced facility. The IRL has contacted the group when they heard of the FIA licence regarding a possible race here. The group has been in contact with Molson regarding replacing the Vancouver race if it is lost. The group has a race date for a Trans Am/ALMS in 2005. The group has approval from Northlands board of directors and is waiting approval from the City of Edmonton. |

Q: Does the Greater-Edmonton area have the population to support a race, attendance-wise?

Q2: How can a track which doesn't even exist already have a race date for TAm/ALMS? Plans haven't even been approved by the city yet!

Edmonton has about 665k. Calgary has 905k. That's about 80% of Alberta's population.
It's about 300 km between the two. |

Champweb should have been classified as a rumor at the beginning of the report.
I agree with the points above. I question the race date as well. The the great location of Northalnds has a lot going for it with the parking and the exhibition halls, light rail transit station, access to the major freeways and close to the city center. The last point, location to city center, puts it near residential areas would be the downfall of any proposed track. As for population, I think Edmontonians are straved for motorsports. In the past the CASCAR races at the City Centre Airport have had great attendance. IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals at Bud Park just outside of Edmonton also had great attendance. And the World Championships in Athletics held a couple of years ago proves that the city can host major sporting event. Since there has been no reports in the local media I don't think this purposed track is anything more than that right now. Time will tell. Last edited by MolsonBoy; 30 Sep 2003 at 17:02. |

But more importantly, what bands are going to be willing to perform in Edmonton?
Edmonton would probably provide some nice scenic backdrop for a proper road course but I don't know whether it will fit the MotoCRock business model of urban street parades. Last edited by corkholio; 30 Sep 2003 at 18:31. |

September - LIVE, DEF LEPPARD, GobSmack, Finger Eleven
October - Hawksley Workman, RHCP, Sloan, Sam Roberts... No Elton John, though. |

Hmm... IRL racing in Canada. More of TG's hypocracy.

Is U2 and Metallica big enough for you, Cork? There's a 45,000 - 50,000 football stadium (Edmonton Eskimos/Canadian Football Leauge) and a 18,000 - 20,000 arena (Edmonton Oilers/NHL). Have you ever liked anything about CART, because since I've joined this forum, I don't remember reading even ONE positive thread that you have posted? Then again, we've been through this before, so who cares!
P.S. There was a website in that article at the bottom of the page that I can't get into....I believe it was - www.northlands.com/maps? Can anybody help? |

Dov,
Just ignore corky. Best thing to do is put him on ignore. This is certainly an interesting proposal, and I must echo the sentiments that it’s strange that a track not even built already has a date! But Canada are more than deserving of another race, or at least a replacement of a lost race. Don’t know much about Canadian geography, so don’t know exactly where it will be located, but when I hear the words ‘road course’, I am pleased to hear it. As for the IRL contacting, WTF??? Like anyone from Canada would attend! |

The strange thing is I haven't heard anything about this proposed track here at northlands. It would probally make a lot more sense for that group to invest the money into the new planned roadcourse for Budweiser Motorsports Park-it's right beside the International Airport.
