This is just devastating and I fear it will lead to a very nasty Le Mans safety concern discussion.
There HAS to be a discussion about the safety of the Armco barriers in this situation, because if what appeared to have happened actually happened, then their use in today's motorsport has to be in question, especially when there's better technology available.

All I can think is that Allan was doing what he loved when he left us for a better place.

Armco vs Concrete, don't have to be a scientist to figure out which is stronger and will hold up better to a race car.

In mixed conditions, Heidfeld has been perhaps the best driver in the field if you ask me, considering the car he has.

Sad for this to happen. In the blink of an eye someone is gone. Peoples lives are changed for the worse. What could/will be done? Two barriers, remove the tree?

You knew things were quite bad when they interviewed Oliver Gavin and he said he could see marks on a tree at the point of interview, but even then you could never believe that Allan was gone.

Davidsons pace is quite good at the moment.

Concrete would have been just as lethal. Ideally you want neither.

RIP Allan. You were one very capable racing driver.

RIP Alan. Tragic news. Was hopeful when they said he was conscious but it did not look good on the drivers side

Condolences to all family, friends and motorsport colleagues. Very sad news.

Keep in mind GTE driver are more lateral and the Prototype drivers are more center line. I wonder if something intruded into the driver compartment? Also I believe the Hans device works better on front to back impacts than lateral impacts.

Shocking. Didn't look like a bad crash to be honest. As others have said, there have been far more devastating looking incidents in recent years. Such a shame, a great loss.

I don't see how he'd been able to penetrate a SAFER barrier though, especially with a flat sideways impact like he had. Unlike armco, which at least at Le Mans consists of 'lengths' stacked three high with gaps between them, the plating in front of the soft blocks in the SAFER barrier is more of a single 'sheet'.

I knew something was up when they brought the car into parc ferme and the cockpit was covered up. IIRC I've never seen a car like that. Possibly armco coming through the cockpit? Or as others have said an issue with a tree?
