Darlington
A little bit of nostalgia prior to this weekend's big race at, arguably, Nascar's toughest race track.
Labor Day 1950. The very first race held at a new race track called Darlington. Nascar drivers did not know what to make of such a big track. Lee Petty was extremely wary of the track and proceded to "reinforce" the roof of his Plymouth - in case of rollover at high speed - with some pipe, and called it a "roll bar". His rivals guffawed and said that was just about the most sissified device they had ever seen in a race car! |

Back then, a lot of the drivers raced in convertibles also. YIKES!

I am reading the book "Daytona" by Ed Hinton. If you are interested in Nascar it is must reading. One of the stories quotes Bill France as saying the best driver he ever saw was Lloyd Seay. If Lloyd Seay had lived Nascar would have been far bigger, far earlier.
Lloyd used to run moonshine south of Dawsonville, GA on a stretch of road where the best made cars today cannot go faster than 75 mi/hr. Lloyd used to go down that stretch at 130 or 140 mi/hr in a souped-up but primitive '39 Ford, with 180 gallons aboard and the law in hot pursuit, a feat impossible to comprehend. |

Lloyd and another guy (partner)were arguing over the cost of sugar (used in making moonshine)at a value of $8.75 and the guy shot Lloyd. Lloyd had over $200 in his pocket at the time.
