This is the first time I am seeing a possible return to Le Mans (albeit in the distant future) mentioned by a Porsche exec:https://www.thechronicle.com.au/news...uture/3668599/
Quote:
Blume says battery tech will feature in Porsche's motorsport programs - both in the short term, with Formula E, and possibly in the long term at Le Mans.
Quote:
"When battery technology will be prepared for long distance races, why not?" he says.

"Up to now we will continue with GT motorsport in the Le Mans series and go to Formula E.

"But never say never for the future. Also, the guys from the WEC and Le Mans have to think about how to make evolution for their series, for [the] future.

"But, why not?"

The press release of that concept said they do NOT intend to make any sort of real, road or race, car of it.

If only had they stayed in the first place for even little while longer (like a year or two), then we wouldn't have to have had ACO panicking like little spoiled children and hastily coming up with these garbage new lobbyist regulations... instead there would be the "boring" conventional ones ACO introduced in 2017 LM for 2020... you know, which still maintained the idea of real racing. What a shame. It's not your fault Porsche, but still a shame

They wanted the 3 ers's, two kers and the turbo ers-h. The ACO was all for it too but then dieselgate happened. Then they had to change their image to 'green' to appease the (disillusioned imo) minority of their "customers". That's why Porsche and Audi are both headed to or are in F-E. No more lmp1 because of that. Oh well. Maybe these regs will open up in the future or they'll just get cancelled for something more technically appealing and Porsche comes back?

Then again these gimmicks were part of the rules package:

- full lap made in EV mode only after a pitstop
- finishing the race in EV mode only

If there was anything good that came out of Porsche's widthdrawal it was that these two ideas got buried instantly.

The second one was silly and could've lead to horrible consequences, but meh the first would've been fine I think... maybe pushed the manufacturers a little

There used to be some talk or rumors about Porsche continuing some engine program after axing WEC... This story from May confirms there was a V6 development program for F1, and even after deciding against F1, that program has continued in smaller capacity.

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/14...2021-f1-engine

Quote:
Porsche has built and tested an engine that would have been Formula 1 compatible and formed the basis of a 2021 entry had it committed to joining the world championship.

...

However, Porsche's F1 prospects ended when the parent Volkswagen Audi Group opted to cancel its World Endurance Championship LMP1 project in favour of a Formula E entry, and the prospect of simplified and cheaper F1 engines stalled.

...

Porsche had a 40-person team from its LMP1 project to develop the six-cylinder engine.

In 2017 it became clear this would not be used for a WEC programme because Porsche committed to leaving that championship once the rules shifted and the series failed to find a replacement for Porsche's sister brand Audi.

Though a move to FE - where Audi is also present - was an "obvious idea", Enzinger said the six-cylinder engine concept was still pursued because an F1 engine without the MGU-H would "also be interesting for a super sports car".

"At the end of 2017, we received a concrete order from our parent company to further develop a highly efficient six-cylinder engine, despite its LMP1 withdrawal," he said.

"Not only on paper but actually as hardware and with the idea that this engine will be put to the test in 2019.

"That was the order from the board to us."

Enzinger said its six-cylinder engine "is complete and running on the test bench" as a team of "20 to 25 technicians" use it "for analyses and further orders with regard to series relevance".

"The possible use for this six-cylinder engine was completely open," he said.

I hope this doesn't end up like another Carrera GT situation with the engine being planned for an entry into racing then decided to be used for a "super sports car".

I wonder if they looked at an Indycar application? They (indy) are trying to court a 3rd engine manufacturer and I dont' think they could do much better than that.

According to rumors yes, but according to rumors interest/talks also cooled down earlier this year.

Unfortunately none of the current Porsche models (either road or racing) seems suited for the 2020 rules.
Increasing the width of the cockpit of the 919, would result in a new monocoque, which would basically a brand new car.
A modified 935 would not stand a chance against the purpose build Glickenhaus and the 917-design is just a wet dream for all Le Mans enthusiast - it will not happen as downforce vs. drag demands has changed since the 70's (mainly because of fewer straight kilometers).
918 is too old and would not have any marketing value any longer.
So all in all, it sounds like Porsche would need to design an LMh or LMDh from scratch*

*LMDh, as scratch as possible since it will be using a stock chassis.
