Plank
What are your thoughts about the planks F1 cars are forced to run on the bottem of the chassis?

They serve two basic purposes.
The main reason they were bought in was to eliminate the running of cars dangerously low on full tanks.Yes those bottoming strips made georgeous sparks but planks were the only safe and easy way anyone has thought of to keep the cars at a safe height.Any plank that loses 10% of it's weight during the race makes the car illegal(at least i think that's how they police it) Also when the planks were bought in it conveniantly allowed the rules to be changed to reduce downforce.Flat undersides were no longer allowed, instead they specified a stepped shape which is less efficient at producing downforce |

Yes there were, must have been in qualifying trim.
I still have the first race of 1997 on tape and when TGF came out for his final run in qualifying Murray + Martin commented on the amount of sparks that were coming from the undertray, adding that he must have lowered the car some more. |
