Red Flag at Monaco
In the melee after the Fisichella crash TV showed a marshall hanging out the red flag.Did they actually red flag the race and change their minds to deploy the safety car or was it the case of a marshall acting independantly?.
I always assumed a red flag would be the call of the race director and the marshalla would display it after that call was made, that being the case did the race director call for the race to be stopped and then change the call to the safety car,If so can you unredflag a red flag once its been called ? Can an expert give us confused and bewildered the gospel on red flags? |

Yeah I wondered that as well. I was a bit confused to see a marshall wave a red flag, only for the race to be declared to be under the safety car. If the marshall was acting independently, then he just cannot do this and should be fired. Or maybe he misheard his radio...
Mind you, the whole race wasn't the best for the marshalls, what with them standing in the middle of the track waving yellow flags or dropping them. Who trained them??? Last edited by DriverT; 26 May 2004 at 09:33. |

From the commentary we had here, Martin Brundle said they displayed the red flag and the SC board at the same time. There seemed to be some general confusion amongst the Monaco marshalls over what they were supposed be doing over the weekend, this was just another example of it IMO.
There is a thread on the Monaco marshalling in the Marshals Forum:http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=54685 |

It was on the start finish straight and they pulled it when the starter displayed the SC board. (As I recall anyway).

It is the Race Director or Clerk of the Course who makes the decision whether to red flag a race or not. Once the decision is made to stop a race the red lights are shown on the start line along with a red flag. In this instance it looks like the flag marshal put the flag out without instructions from Race Control.
Once a red flag is put out at the start line, it cannot be withdrawn. There has to be a re-start. |

It was the right decision not to red flag the race though.

Do you think that is why DC stopped -- and Fisi drove over him?

No.
DC said he was going slowly because he couldn't see. The red flag was shown - briefly - after the Fisichella crash. |

I thought DC slowed because he couldn't see through the smoke from Sato's engine blow. Fissi had the same prob and drove into the back of DC?

This happened once before - in Spain I think - when there was an incident and a lone Marshal put out a red flag after Schuey crashed out at the start.
Schuey saw the red flag and legged it back to the pits for the T-Car only to discover that the SC was out and the race was continuing....without him! |
