They haven't decided yet if they will use the new engine for Le Mans. I heard on Radio Le Mans that the changes they made to the motor are part of a bigger operation. These are only the first steps in the operation. The new engine will only reach it full potential if all the planned updates are materialized. One of the updates yet to come is that the airbox has to be completely redisigned. I don't know if there is enough time left to implement all these planned updates. At Spa the new engine was reliable and seemed allready faster than the old one though, and if there is more to come...

Peugeot #8 clipping Spyker #85
I found this press release at Spyker Squadron:
Sun 11 May 2008 Update after incident involving car #85 15:25 update: we have just had a yellow flag situation where both the Audi #1 and Peugeot #8 and the Spyker #85 were involved. In the double left-hander Ralf Kelleners was driving the Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R. Ralf stayed on the right-side as he saw that he was being overtaken on the left side by the Audi driven by Capello. The Peugeot followed the Audi immediately and tried to overtake or out-brake the Audi from the slipstream. In the maneuver the #8 Peugeot driven by Alexander Wurz moved to the right from behind the Audi in a gap that did not exist and hit the Spyker on the front left. In the same accident the Audi was also hit by the Peugeot, directly or as a result of the Peugeot’ spin, and had to return with a punctured tire. The Spyker could return to the pitbox and is now running in an 11th position. Here's some footage I made with my phonecam from the Spa race which gives a soundcomparison of the new motor against the old version( ).
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=yA99Cz6txgM The new engine comes by at 00:49 and the old one at 01:27 Actually, the new unit doesn't quite sound as bad as I'd feared(like the 430's) and it's still got this V8 throatiness in it,especially in the lower rev band. |

Had a chat with a couple of the mechanics in the box before the race. I'll drop my news here tomorrow. |

Sorry Badger,had to work first
About the new motor. I was told that the unit used in Spa was the 180 degree crankshaft but still retained the chaindrive to the cams. For Le Mans, the plan is to equipe both cars with the geardriven camshafts for this'll ofcourse be a whole lot more reliable. On my question if it wasn't too big a gamble to implement a new system on the big race, the answer was that it was better then knowing the chaindrive will break anyhow... The team was very pleased with the performance of the new unit so far as it showed quite a noticable powerhike, especially at higher revs. This ofcourse generates a lot more vibrations and so the team has place the new engine in more elaborate flexible mountingpoints to counter any nasty side effects. And,as expected, there pretty much is no difference to be seen from the outside which version were dealing with... New: Old: Notice the airconpump sitting atop the gearbox(it worked flawlessly this time...) As for the new airbox plans @Stephan2738 was allready telling us about, the team really need it because the current system is awkward looking as it is. If you look at the(slightly out of focus) pics, one sees how the air has to turn back on the way it came in,which ofcourse is not ideal to say the least... In the picture of the rear clamshell, which includes the roofintake, one can see this is not yet in use but one doesn't need much imagination to see how the airbox layout will fit atop the engine intake area nicely. |

Very interesting GTfour, thanx for sharing!
Any news on other updates for Le Mans? For instance: Will the engine be enlarged to 4,0 liter by then? |

As I'm informed, the new flatplane engine allready was running 4.0L and both cars will run to this spec for Le Mans.

Cheers for that GTfour ..... cant wait for all the mods to be applied . Hope it can bring it to the big boys . Wouldnt it be brilliant to have a small scale manufactuter beat the pants off the big boys a few times ..... especially as it is a lovely looking car with imo , one of the best looking livery's around for ages .

Agreed, allthough I have to say that I liked last years livery even better...
I think them Spykers have a fairly good chance of getting to the podium at Le Mans, for surely the Ferrari's will all get problems with this long, long race and there aren't that many Porsches to rob the podium all for themselves. Here's to hoping! |

I also would love to see the Spyker program developped more. Customers buying Spykers like 997s and F430s. That would be great racing, and customers would have a more of a choice To the Spykers |
