And the bulkhead is rather prominent in this area… I see blokes engines having small plates to retain those core plugs. It must take one full day adjusting and drilling decades old cast iron. A really boring job. And I'm convinced that those leaks have to do with the "modern" materials and "improved" design…

Terence, if you're using the Ford gearbox with synchromesh as I do where the heck could I find steel ball rings? I use often the first speed and the new materials are way softer than originals. |

Morningentleman if you're still in the business or only interested in, have a look to some appendix J end of period of the car you're targeting. Sometimes interesting things about arb's could be used only if allowed by the appendix K.

Thanks for taking car, Terence, what I mean is **** corrector! Baulkrings anneaux de synchros in good french. When you see what is available for an Escort we are really put apart with the Capris. Unless using dog engagement which is not allowed…

Yes Gordon you're right. The 3 liter had two gearboxes homologated, the second is really bulletproof and used on the 2.8 first gen. This unit looks like the Rocket found on Escorts but internals are different sadly. On the Capri we have to use the first speed. And before anyone asks, yes we double declutch!

Gerard, I drill and tap blocks all the time, the main reason being, old blocks have probably had several core plugs already, the holes wear a bit . . . when you fit a core plug sometimes they feel loose, and they do occaisionally pop . . . .it happened to me at Goodwood, in 2011, on the last lap and cost me a top ten finish!!!!!! I use 2 x M5 screws with a penny washer. It takes time, like all good engines do, but is not difficult. |

Thanks a lot, Joe, this is helpful. It takes time but it makes the difference between rod going car and a race car, whatever the category is.
I remember watching pics from your car at GW and Spa too. |

Like this . . .a little green loctite on the core plugs, and just thread sealant NOT thread lock on the screws. |

Nice one. ARP bolts for the head? What kind of "happy body" will receive this jewel?
Ha, by the way, do you know how long the Cortinavirus lasts? Forever may be! |

I'm recovering quite well . . .have been considering a complete clear out of the damned things for some time, If I could just find a willing 'sucker', sorry, 'custodian' to give me a fair price for them! That particular engine is an FJ 1098cc and lives well in a Marcos. |

Find your gearbox & see what they list .But they are not cheap . I have always preferred the brass type , but the most important thing is to get the end float on the synchro hub correct , or the baulks will break . |

never used steel baulk rings, they just wreck the gearbox, bronze is fine if you know how to use the box properly.
Duddha . . .maybe . . .Always said I never would, BUT a few things have changed since then . . .I don't think there are many if any better original paint cars around. and I agree re Interpretation of ARB mounts . . . . its just top momunts and axle location to nail down now |

Thanks Tel and Joe, you're certainly right about the use of the gearbox. The supplier named is very serious had absolutely no issue with those people so far. We dont look so much to the prices because so happy to find available parts! Just noticed that sometimes there's a difference between brass or bronze produced nowadays and what was made before…

But they all need carefully matching to individual gear cones . . .then you need to try and train the nut behind the wheel to move the stick and pedal without and noises. . . . . not so easy when they think they go faster by making a load of unpleasant noises. |

On the top mounts and axle location, we have documentation and we made it available to scrutineers. Now it's up to people to check. |

I'm but an expert but after so many hours spent with old 911's units I understand what you mean. In enduro I had quite few co-drivers being real experts to strip a box without any spanner! And not all of them were really fast…

Old gearboxes. It's counter intuitive but you really need to feed the change slowly (gently) especially when going from third to second. That said, my old Capri box was pretty robust, can't say the same for the MGB or the LT77 gearboxes.
