Didn't Dunlop just a season or two ago dominate LMP2 and have customers in the GT classes? I wonder what happened that resulted in most of their customers switching to Michelin?

They need competition in this formula, as sportscar racing has always been about technology and development

I feel the teams switching tire manufcaturers are doing so more for short-term performance rather than building a long-term relationship.
Last year the Michilin tire proved to be quite fast and durable, which caused United Autosports to switch from Dunlop to Michelin (and they promptly won a few races). It was especially the pace of the Panis-Barthez car that inspired them to make the switch. Now, Dunlop has introduced a new spec, and it seems to be auite performant, and hop: Panis-Barthez now switches from Michelin to Dunlop. |

It's funny how they're transforming P1/GTP/Car-Car aka "do whatever you want we don't care" class into another tired spec tire deal, under the pretense of cost savings, yet LMP2 that's actually cost capped with off-the-shelf cartel spec cars still retains the open formula.

It's already a quasi-spec tire formula given that Michelin supplies almost all the WEC teams now, even in LMP2. I know that Dunlop has a deal with the ELMS, but even most of those teams (as has been referenced here) do LM or non-ELMS deals with Michelin or another supplier of their choice.

Mandated specness is entirely different to circumstantial "specness" caused by short term external factors / quality of the suppliers

If you want entry strictly on performance, easier way would be to declare a selection of other races as "qualifiers" to go along with champions + WEC entries
Might be a way to build up the prestige of (for instance) the AsLMS round at Bathurst |

I guess Alpine's rebadging deal wasn't a "special one" after all and everyone can call their French cartel chassis whatever they wish, even in the official timing sheets
At least in P1 the fake branding is _mildly_ less annoying because they're not spec chassis, and also no-one else is running Oreca atm |

No confirmations but probably a few educated guesses to be had from the ELMS R1 entry.

They can't stop anyone branding chassis now. The Alpine deal was always complete BS because the excuse they used changed every year. Now they can't have an excuse so it's a free-for-all.
They should buy one of the ORECA 07s that used to be branded an Alpine. That way it can have a third chassis plate on it. |

And yet the ACO aren't willing to bend the rules and let a so-called factory team run a non-hybrid. Which, of course, is about the only way that Ginetta will run their LMP1 now.
Granted, I'd bet that if Lawrence Tomlinson is willing to part with enough money, the ACO might be willing to bend their own rules to that end. How do we think that Alpine (along with being French) and now G-Drive's rebranding effort have happened? |
