Much more impressive by the Virgin team today. Where are the people who have already written them off as a complete and utter embarrassment?

It was a good time it set with apparently lots of fuel onboard. These 'new' cars will not be like the 'back-markers' of old.

"I don't think we are the lightest car on the sheet and we are not the heaviest," said di Grassi.

Yep, my apologies, it is probably graining, not blistering.

Here's Sutil's own explanation.

Autosport:

Q. It looked as though the tyres were graining pretty quickly. Did you find that as well?

AS: "Yeah, they are. It was the same for us, especially the soft tyre was lasting only a few laps and then it started graining already. But there I think we have to learn a little bit how to treat them better. There are several ways you can avoid the graining or just extend it for a little bit longer.

At a certain point the graining will come especially in this kind of conditions - the track was not good today – the tyres grain up really quickly. The hard tyre worked a little bit better but normally you expect no problem with the hard tyre and today the graining came in and it was really difficult to handle it."

Yes, the intermediate tyres are bald after just a few laps in conditions that would normally suit them.

If Virgin are within 6 seconds of the pole-sitter at Melbourne, then I think it will have to be considered a success.

If they get within 4, then hats off big time. It would be a definite achievement.

If they get within 3 seconds, well, absolute maximum kudos (IMO).

Yeah thanks Tim. I really do try to focus.

Wonderfully timely for Fauzy then, maybe that'll help generate some interest in the sport in that part of the globe.

Fairuz did the shakedown as well. I guess his dad is having an influence there, although he has some F1 testing experience from the past as well so he's not a total rookie

I don't think I have been slating them. I was pretty appalled that the front wing mountings weren't strong enough, because Nick Wirth should have learnt his lesson from the Simtek in '94.

Otherwise I am really interested to see how a car designed solely by CFD compares with the others. There seem to be less fiddly bits on the car, so it looks to be a nice, clean design.

It has reached the point where the only new teams I am taking seriously are Virgin and Lotus. Campos and USF1 are very much on the back burner so far as I am concerned, although I am desperately sorry for Bruno Senna.

Actually there is seemingly more positive news on the Campos front, with suggestions that Colin Kolles has bought into/out the team. Karun Chandhok is rumoured to be partnering Bruno Senna

Hopefully Virgin get more track time this week. Despite their poor showing at the last test, I still think they could suprise a few people when the season kicks off in Bahrain. But for sure, they need more track time.

I will admit to being impressed at Virgin's pace. Still we don't know things like fuel loads, but even so, it is looking good for them.

I don't see why everybody is so cynical with "OMG, 3 seconds off the pace! That's brilliant for them!" I really don't see any evidence to say that that is the best they can do.

Wait, are you saying you expect them to be closer or further away? Don't quite get what you're saying there

Obviously we can't judge on one test but it does look positive. They've got more parts to come. NW has said they've got new wings coming soon. But of course so have all the other teams so it just depends on whether they can gain more than the pacesetters

Plus it's worth remembering that on that last day, di Grassi was at the wheel - he's not driven much at all lately. Surely Glock will take off another couple of tenths more

I was expecting them to be further off the pace. Going by that last day, it seems that they'll be around where Midland and Spyker were with the updated last Jordan they used

I'm saying I expect them to be nearer to the lead pace. Give them a break. Of course they arn't going to be lighting up the time sheets in their first test, but what new team (apart from Brawn, and that was really Honda in a different guise anyway) did? I'm just saying, everybody is writing them off already with all the snide comments about being within 3 seconds of the pace being an "awesome" achievement for them, etc, etc. Of course they won't be fighting for wins straight off, but they won't be truly horrible either.

Virgin and Lotus at the test together today - could be interesting.

The Lotus looks very nice from this angle imo.

Lotus look slow (though it is Fauzy driving), at 9 seconds off the pace so far today. Virgin look worse, 11 seconds so far. Ouch.
