Thruxton 27.5.1974 Formula 5000
For today's offering I thought I would step back 46 years to the first meeting I attended, the Formula 5000 meeting at Thruxton on the 27th May 1974. The main race attracted nineteen starters and saw reigning champion Teddy Pilette (1) lead for most of the race until running out of fuel at the last corner of the last lap allowing Ian Ashley (12) to just pip Peter Gethin (8) for a fortunate victory. The pictures show the start of the race, Pilette leading Derek Bell, Ian Ashley and Ashley competing 41 years later at Thruxton in his Lola T300.

Thruxton 27.5.74 Castrol Touring Cars
The main support to the Formula 5000s was the Touring Car race. The first year of Group 1 saw Camaros dominate the overall results and Thruxton was no different with Stuart Graham and Richard Lloyd dominating the race until Graham retired leaving Lloyd to take a comfortable victory from Tom Walkinshaw's Capri. The pictures show the start, Richard Lloyd's Camaro, Bob Ridgard's Camaro, Barrie Williams Mazda, Gerry Marshall's Firenza and Stuart Graham's Camaro being demonstrated by Nigel Garrett at the Thruxton Golden Jubilee meeting.

Thruxton 27.5.74 Special Saloons
Gerry Marshall's mount for the 1974 season was Big Bertha, the big and beautiful V8 powered Vauxhall Ventora. Main opposition to Gerry in this race was Mick Hill in his Tricentrol Capri and the first picture shows the pair of them going side by side through the first corner. Unfortunately Big Bertha soon developed a problem forcing Gerry to retire and leaving Mick Hill to win. The second picture shows Gerry apparently searching for the problem (gear linkage ?).

Thruxton 27.5.74 Droopsnoot
The last race on the programme was a special one make race for Vauxhall Firenza Droopsnoots with drivers who had competed in the previous races driving. Gerry Marshall rounded off an unsuccessful day by finishing second to Barrie Williams. The pictures show the start and Gerry Marshall leading Barrie Williams.

Thruxton 27.5.74 Swordfish
Finally the lunchtime entertainment was provided by RNAS Yeovilton's Swordfish Torpedo Bomber which flew serenely around the circuit. P.S. The photos are courtesy of my brother Colin.

Thanks for those pictures. What a meeting that must have been to go to. The fly pass must have been worth the admission by the looks of that plane

It was certainly a great day SG. I had forgotten the Grandstand along the Pit Straight at Thruxton. Oh to have meetings like that these days !!

Colin is a professional photographer (now retired) but I think it was the first time he had taken photographs at a (car) race meeting.
Regarding improving the originals I preferred to leave them as they were, I felt it somehow gave them a more period feel. Compared to my modern digital photos, although crystal clear they somehow lack the raw 'energy' of Colins shots. Thanks for the comments Baub there are more to come. |

Nice batch of pleasant cars. Do you remember the strange record held by "Le gorille de Monza"?

At last one of the best Porsche ever. What a chassis! Fragile but top efficiency.

Goodwood Flyers 2015
As there has recently been an aviation slant on Delta's Twentea Twentea Tea Break lately I thought I would post some happy snappies of the aircraft seen at the Goodwood Revival in 2015.

Continuing the aviation theme here is Swift Aviation's 2.45 flight coming in to land at Thruxton International Airport.

I was thinking more of Rupert Keegan in his British Air Ferries car at Paddock Bend, Brands as one of the best flights I recall.
