I find this interesting
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/43487528 I often stuck up for sky citing the example of rugby. They actually put games on telly, it was the only way to watch club games realistically. Obviously this is in the days FTA was only four or five channels. They built it up and when there was a base to launch a new European Cup they pushed that too. It became big. BT has nicked a lot of it. Now it’s on FTA! That’s competition. They’ve gone the opposite way to F1 in some ways. Although if you want to watch the second tier English rugby and a lot of foreign club games sky still support it. And our Simon started on rugby. |

Team sports have multiple matches per weekend, so they can put some on air, some on basic cable, some on premium, and some online.
In individual sports, there's only one event per weekend, so you can't really do that. |

True. If I had a point, it was more that sky added to the sport and now FTA stole (a bit of) it! The organisers thought it good to give them some coverage, including the final - only one game then!

According to JAonF1 CCTV the main state run channel in CHina has just signed to show F1 on FTA nationwide.
That's a potentially larger FTA audience than F1 has ever had and in a market for more sales of the high end merchandise F1 relates too than any other. I think Liberty has it's eye on the prize. |

I'm watching a re-run of qualifying on Fox Sports 3, as live coverage was in the early morning while I was sleeping, and on Fox Premium Action which I decided not to pay for.
Pit reporter Juan Fossaroli said that the TV press was split in 5 groups, and he was paired with other Spanish and French journalists. They had just 3 minutes for all questions in both languages. |

You just have to remember one thing, BE only developed F1 for one reason and one reason only and that was as a wealth development tool for him and others he invited in, there was no other reason. To think he did it for any other reason like developing the sport to make it more sporting is naive to say the least. The genie is now out of the bottle so there will be no turning back now.

Yes I concur. It is no longer a sport, or indeed a spectacle. And Yes, no turning back.

I think it's more of a question of how one goes about marketing F1, rather than if it is still marketable. For example, putting F1 behind a pay wall is going to limit viewer accessibility, which in turn will lead to less exposure for companies advertising their products and companies will therefore look elsewhere, so their products get better exposure.

one bit of news from the weekend was the announcement of a 10 part Netflix doc to air next year about the 2018 season.
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/n...9-1018131/?s=1 if done well (one of the same producers as the Senna doc) things like this have a great chance of exposing a wider audience to F1 particularly to those that dont subscribe to the F1 paywall. |

it's only a documentary, so the smart money would be to wait until it was all on there, and then take the months free trial and binge watch it

That would be subject to regional access.

It's still a paywall though isn't it? OK not as big a paywall as Sky etc but it isn't FTA by any stretch of the imagination.
Plus being a documentary it will be interesting to see how much actual racing they show, compared to "unique behind the scenes access" and "candid interviews." In other words the cheap stuff. What will attract new people to the sport is great racing, easy to find and cars that really fire the imagination. Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk |

Nothing is truly free. Even C4 coverage requires a TV licence. But I do worry for viewing figures once it’s Sky only.

Among all the gloom and dissatisfaction no one is mentioning the new CCTV deal for live coverage in China by the top rated (and State owned) broadcaster there.
If they can get 5% ratings it will put the audience figures in both Europe and the US in perspective. |
