Russfeld should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Whats the track record for promotion from Class B F3 to a higher series? If you've got 250k quid to spend, win a season of Renaults, do a nutso amount of F3 testing in the fall, then go to Class A. Maybe...maybe if Class B F3 was the same price as a season of Renaults, it might be worth looking at, but even then you're probably better off, as a racer winning a meaningful title than being best in class of 5 cars, 3 of whom might be able to win.

Totally agree with Russfeld. Paffett,Kerr and Carroll only did it in the days when the winner pocketed the £100k end of season 1st prize. Since the prize money was withdrawn it's just a very expensive and pointless category.

That is true but do you still think Paffett and Kerr would have won their respective Championship Class titles straight out of the box if they hadn't done a year in the B Class first?

I beg to differ, yes the £100,00 would have been a factor but doing a learning year away from the spotlight in the B Class in order for a full on title assault in the A Class the following year is a wise move. Why waste a year in Renault...what are you learning apart from how to race a slicks and wings car? Everythings very narrow set up wise and its a one make formula so little scope for much development. Develpment, set up work etc its all stuff your going to have to get used to when you get further up the ladder....

Green,Rossiter,Hamilton,Watts, and Courtney, to name but a few, never wasted time and money in Class B.Without the prize money why bother?Last year Ryan Lewis could spin, fluff the start, damage his wings, rip the floor off and stop for a BigMac and still win! What on earth did he learn for £250k?

Last year was different, it was a weak year but who knows how he'll go in 2005?

Green, Rossiter, Hamilton, Watts and Courtney all had their development year in the spotlight of the A Class. How many drivers have seen their careers/reputations ruined by doing a learning year in the A Class and finding themselves crawling around at the back of the field? You might as well learn the craft of F3 in the relative background of the B Class without all the added pressure.

I've never raced an F3 car so can't tell you what development there is but its F3 development goes on all the time. In Renault its all one make and under strict technical regulations, what can you learn from that?

How not to blame it on the team and car and find the speed within yourself.

IMO National F3 is all about being the same as all those worldwide F3 series that run on older cars - like the German "Cup" thing. Drivers in many of those series also have access to other series like FRenault. It's just a choice thing. I think that with Jonathan Kennard and Valle Makela in the category, to name but 2 that I can remember, it's going to be a pretty good competition this year. Anyay, that debate is very off-topic, so if you want to carry on arguing, Gaz'n'Russ me old sparring pardeners, can I humbly suggest you start your own thread?

Here, does anyone understand the relationship between Carlin and "Team IVY"? I've read several reports about Keiko Ihara and Koji Shirogani driving for IVY, but others that Ihara is going to be with Carlin (including current testing stuff). Wha'appen?

Class B are obsolete cars for drivers with more money than sense or talent. If you really want to have an F3 learning year away from the spotlight and at a fraction of the cost then do ARP F3.What's the difference?

The difference is that ARP F3 disqualifies the champion if they don't like him

ARP F3 is even better then!By the sounds of it you'll certainly learn something, get no prize money and probably spend less than £100k!

He learnt how to drive an F3 car properly, e.g. by most people's watches he was fastest in testing at Pembrey today, ahead of the much-fancied (by some) Mike Conway.

Secondly, which is the point I was thinking you might not know/understand, this year's National Class is very different from the Scholarship Class of recent years. The possibilities to make your name are the same, but the cost is less and the competition greater. There should be around 10 cars on the grid at Donington, all with a control-spec Mugen-Honda engine.

For 250k you could do an entire year of Class A testing, dovetailed with say...an FPA season, or go off and do a proper 'small' F3 series like Spanish F3, or do a full national season of Formula Renault plus lots of extra races

Or buy a 4 bedroom house which will appreciate at say 15% per annum.Compounded over 5 years that gives you a profit of £252,839.29! So do you go F3 Class B or make yourself an easy 1/4 £million ?

Well your house example only works if you can guarantee the increase in property prices year on year.

And I'd assume the sponsor had given you the funding for the purpose of a racing career, not buying a house.

investor - not a sponsor

I think Russfeld means sub-F1 singel seaters as sponsorship clearly does exist in saloons and sportscars

We don't actually use our tongues to post on the forum (at least I don't!), so the garlic press idea wouldn't make much difference. But I did have some very nice garlic mushrooms the other night..

lol @ foxy. The threat of a garlic press on my tongue would certainly make me think about what I posted, whether I used tongue, fingers or whatever! ("Can I use your dictaphone" joke somehow comes to mind)
