The pics on DSC show that the RML car is running its 2006 noes. Perhaps they wern't overally impressed with the 2007 one? Or are they holding it back for qual?

As a fan of big poweful cars, like everyone else, I'm pleased to see the ACO will take into account the quicker track when assesing their tedious target lap times:-
'The remarkably fast lap times may also be slightly deceptive because we don’t know for sure exactly what effect the Tertre Rouge changes will have made.' I fully expect diesels to be pegged back with a smaller restrictor, let's say 5%, maybe even 10%. We'll have to see how many laps they can run before considering a smaller fuel tank. DSC also report the lead Zytek could have achieved a theoretical 3.37 lap, could we speculate an RS Spyder would be in the 3.34/35 range. |

Restrictors will have only a marginal impact on diesel's power. Control the fuel flow rate to prevent them throwing more fuel into the engine (and producing more power). Additionally, give petrol cars a 75kg reduction in weight.

Bear with me, everyone - I'm rather out of touch...but what sort of average speed does 3:30, 3:27 etc represent ?

That is just not precise enough! I'm on a mission to find out the new length!
Maybe I'll produce a lap speed table like they used to have in programmes |

Corvette says it is a slightly shorter 13.629km (8.469 miles).
http://www.motorsport.com/news/artic...FS=ALMS-LEMANS So a 3.26.707 is 147.50mph Numbers are great. |

Of course this takes no account of changing settings and conditions (etc), but the theoretical ideal laps are much closer (for instance #1 ideal lap is made up of sector 1 from its 55th lap, 2 from 106th, 3 from 97th). However here are the top few:
No great changes if you consider theoretical rather than ideal near the top. Although it is interesting to see that the Pesca hooked them all up on one lap. Last edited by Adam43; 4 Jun 2007 at 17:58. |

We've put together a compilation of 2006-2007 lap times that some might find interesting. What to compare with what is all rather subjective...in some cases there's a complete change of equipment...in others, drivers...so you can make of it what you will.

Well done TWK! That gives some interesting if not real comparisons. It does strike me though that the average increase is between 3-5 secs. Ok so technology moves on ad some teams are in almost completely different machinery (Rollcentre springs to mind) But overall it does give a clue as to what these teams have acheived in the interim.

While the comparison looks interesting, I would draw no conclusions. Although it came with a heavy 'health warning', it is not big enough. Comparing performance over a test day is unbelieveably misleading when different teams are operating to different plans. Tracks change through the day in terms of grip etc etc.. When this is added to the fact that many teams have different cars and different drivers and different tyre suppliers when compared to a year ago (when the track's grip levels may have also been very different from Sunday's) it is nearly impossible to make any conclusions. Too many variables At least in the P categories, most teams went faster. Was it the track, the cars, the drivers, the tyres, the testing programmes, the changes to the track that caused this? Who knows.
Too many variables and too many unknowns. |

I think you can draw one conclusion; lap times are generally quicker this year. How much is unclear though, for all those reasons.

Actually, I'm not sure you can draw generalizations at all about the field. What you can see is the change year-to-year in individual situations. |
