I set my distributor at 13 degrees BTDC static on this occaision and it was 17 when I stripped the engine down . . . and damaged, eitther it moved of its own accord or the clown at the rolling road thought it made a nice noise under heavy acceleration as the pistons began to melt max advance being 35 degrees is a bit too much

would a long spark jump accross affect timing ? or either just work, or not . . . .

I thought you said the rotor arm had worn where it mounted to the shaft in which case presumably it would back off against the direction of rotation, i.e. retard not advance the ignition.

Zef, Kenny Colman of EDA once advised me NEVER adjust ignition timing (or 'swing' the dizzy while engine running) on a rolling road or dyno and being pigheaded when his man reconned it need a bit more advance as the engine was making huge torque at 2000rpm (420ftlbs!) and we should advance it to try to get more HP, against Ken's advise I gave him the nod, 20 seconds later the engine melted the tops off the pistons!! Ken was right.

All it does is distribute the spark to the pick ups in the cap !

.
Al please believe me the rotor arm will not alter the timing
It may get so clapped out that it will spark on the wrong lead pickup, but the engine would stop !
Incidentally I always superglue the rotor arm on the shaft, if I need to change it I crush it with mole grips and take it off in kit form !

I have never thought about it doing so before Zef mentioned it and the only way I could get my head around what he was saying is somehow it had become so loose on the shaft that it was a few degrees out, what you are obviously pointing out that this would not alter anything as it would still be in the proximity of the HT lead terminal and presumable the spark will jump to make up the fraction it is out once the points open to fire it, no??
