Would really love to have audio for this session at least. It's strange that live coverage in advance of the race has taken such a leap backwards. |

Hopefully the race is closer than the >1.5 second gap to the front.

Let’s see how they do over 24 hours; this is endurance racing, not a sprint.

Interestingly the Delta Wing is right on pace, and ahead of Scott Pruett in the Ganassi car.

Were cool temps possibly an issue given that the P2 cars have a harder time getting tired up to temp?
Lack of pre qualifying practice may have been a factor as well. |

Luhr’s lap time was right there with Negri and Pruett.

Could be part of the problem, with the very short sessions. Also: The DP teams have thousands of miles of experience at Daytona, how realistic was it to expect the P2s right on the pace even with a good BoP (I am still not convinced it's bad, the DPs actually got kind of whacked after the roar)?

Oak obviously had an issue as they had done a 1:40.4 in FP2. But yeah, MMPR did their best ever lap at Daytona (though still slower than HPD at the Roar). The #99 gained 1 second over its best time from the Roar.

It was critical they get their Daytona specific BoP correct. I am not saying they got it wrong, but it doesn't look good so far. We'll see what happens in the race.

It's really hard to know when of the six P2s, five had obvious issues and the last car (MMPR) was the fastest while also having the least experience with its new to them car. And to take it a step further, if ESM, OAK, and Mazda don't get it together, it really doesn't — and shouldn't — matter what the BOP is.

Daytona is a very hard track to get right, not only for IMSA but for teams also. It has several enormous straights and only a few tight corners. Sebring is more like an average track, Long Beach will favor the P2 cars by maneuverability alone, Laguna Seca is also tight, et cetera.
Basically... Daytona: P2 < DP Sebring: P2 = DP Long Beach: P2 > DP Laguna Seca: P2 > DP Belle Isle: P2 > DP Watkins Glen: P2 = DP CTMP: P2 = DP Indy: P2 < DP Road America: P2 < DP CoTA: P2 = DP Road Atlanta: P2 = DP It should be pretty fair, IMO. |
