I know the official power rating numbers are a PR rounded thing, but here goes anyway the ICE power:
2014, 6MJ class, fuel flow: 89.5 kg/h: 520 PS (5.8 PS/(kg/h))
2016, 8MJ class, fuel flow: 80.6 kg/h: 500 PS (6.2 PS/(kg/h))

So ~7 % better efficiency than old one.

What was the claimed efficiency of the old engine, 41.3%? If that was the case that would make it 44.2% for the V6. Doubtful it's that high, but still good progress for them.

Thermal efficiency and peak power probably don't come at the same time as peak efficiency is probably lower in rpm range. These numbers only suggest peak power efficiency improved 7%.

As for the exact numbers it was already in 2011 that the Japanese claimed to have 43.7 % thermal efficiency on their petrol DI lean burn turbo concept:

Very impressive. I can't wait to see how the cars stack up now, and if they will be able to match the 2015 times.

The aerodynamic concept, and particularly the front face of the car, has changed drastically. “We have spent thousands of hours refining this new concept and this time we have done more than incremental changes; we have significantly changed the way we handle the flow structure after the front downforce-generating devices.

Who am I to doubt Vasselon and, indeed, I believe in that. It just makes me wonder the huge impact that Audi's new front might have.

The PR is very confident and optmistic without being arrogant, I like that.

Thinking back to the Peugeot 908, that changed even less in appearance than Toyota's TS0X0's have.
So just because we cannot see the improvements, there might be significant improvements to the concept.
Audi has just gotten us used to new aero concepts for their new cars.

Toyota adopting a raised nose design is a very significant change to the aero, as they have the air flow through the car instead of everything over the car.

I'm just surprised how similar the rear looks. But also, let's not forget the changes under the bodywork. Completely different engine and energy storage. Even if it doesn't look like it from the outside, the Toyota probably is the car that has changed the most over the winter.

True, but then again, Toyota were very confident last year too, until the first laps were clocked in. So I'm a bit weary of their abilities to assess where they stand for now

Toyota had the right to be confident last year really though. The fastest car just went a couple of seconds faster. How can it go wrong? Nobody seen the stratospheric improvement from the VAG brothers coming.

Not to brag or anything, but i was saying last season at the unveiling of the car (with the tech spec) and especially after the Prologue that they won't win a single race. I was actually a little surprised how close they were in Silverstone.

The Prologue did give us a pretty accurate representation of the balance of performance between them, so i can't wait to see how they do tomorrow.

Having looked at the "real life" pics from Paul Ricard today, I must do the say as I did with Oreca 05 while back and eat my words a bit: it actually looks great from the angle they chose. Not quite as good as TS030, and certainly the livery could be less generic too, but I am quite pleased. The raised cockpit height isn't nearly as distracting either. The awful previous car shall fade in shadows.

Now the only ugly LMP1 on the grid is Audi.

YES. YES. Come on, do it Toyota. It will be your best decision yet in LMP1. Even if it's just "-- we expect to have maybe...--" it sounds much more realistic than the tone we've heard before.

Toyota’s February test was not, as reported elsewhere, with the final spec TS050, but rather with an interim spec car. Their car tests in low downforce spec for the first time next week we understand.

Vasselon interview on SC365 talks a bit about the changes to the powertrain and chassis. I like this part

“For the chassis, we started from where the car had to be,” he said. “We simulated the car and the performance level we were targeting.

“This gives us all of the chassis parameters, including the load cases. The car will be faster than last year so the load cases in the suspension is different.

“This is why we needed to design every single bit [new]. We need to follow very precisely what it needed and to the exact requirement.”

According to project manager John Litjens on Motorsport-Total.com the car is still overweight. Let's hope they are able to shed some weight otherwise they are already on their backfoot.

That's next year at the earliest. But the motorsport.com article mentions Ryo Hirakawa in the third car.
