very smart to use that kind of runoff there... is just a corner where f1 cars come at >330km/h... if brakes fail it will be insanely dangerous without gravel...

Doesnt ruin the track if theres still some gravel. Think its likely theyre doing this because Bernie has been talking of dropping monza? Gotta do something to host F1 I guess.

I heard that the initial reason for the change was actually better run-off area for WSBK, not F1.

Itd be safer for riders to have asphalt if an accident happened there?

Probably. I don't think that sliding through gravel at top speed would be a particularly pleasant experience.

If youre in a slide off the bike, it seems like asphalt would prolong it. It sure isnt as tough a surface though.

The gravel causes the drivers to tumble violently. They can get thrown back in the air and so on. Sliding along the tarmac in full riding gear is much safer. That being said why do the bikes have to race Monza. Can't they go to Vallelunga or Mugello? If accommodating bike racing is what is turning many great tracks into colored car parks, then....

I would only blame bikes for (most of the) asphalt run offs on European & Asian Grade 2 tracks, F1 usually demands them for Grade 1. Looks like this is an exception

Anyway Monza was one of the last remaining active F1 tracks with minimal asphalt runoff, now it is probably on par with Suzuka as holding 2nd least amount. Albert Park is obviously the sole remaining one without them (except the single urban street car park that does not count + somewhat widened corner entries at places)

It's extra annoying as WSBK already has two Italian rounds...

I've seen pics where the new runoff extends to the end of the Parabolica now as well (lead up to the start finish straight), so expect further track violations.

So I see that the Nationwide is using the actual start/finish straight at Mid-Ohio for their race starts and re-starts. ALMS (and ICS) have traditonally used the iconic backstretch for their starts.

I'm not sure I follow the logic here. I understand that the reasoning for using the secondary start straight is for safety - surely 40 something car NASCAR field qualifies for that...

As for Mid-Ohio otherwise, it's kinda strange as it was never one of my favourites in ALMS, but now that it's gone I miss seeing it.

World Challenge also started from the actual s/f straight but it makes sense for a series with standing starts. However, the flying re-starts were performed there as well - strange for a gigantic field like that again

Can't sayit with any certainty, but even Super GT had to shorten their races when money was tight at the height of the financial crisis for some years, so maybe that's alson why there wasn't a lot of support for a 24h-race in Japan anymore.
