Another of my all-time favorites (with bias). Maybe some day I will have time to make it larger. This was during testing early in the week at the PLM '99 and not too many people around. The track had been red flagged and I was one of the first on the scene after seeing JJ Lehto put the BMW V12 LMR almost straight into the wall while doing approximately 150 MPH.
My first concern was Lehto because I knew that he had broken his neck before and I wanted to make sure the guy was OK and no one else was around, yet. Next thing I knew, Lehto was removing the nose of the car and I was standing there talking to him holding the nose while he inspected the damage. Surreal. While holding the nose, I kept the camera rolling. There was only minor damage to the monocoque nose. Bill Auberlen walked up and said, "I've seen men die in less impacts than that!" http://www.lasersol.com/CyberMotor/Lehto%2099%20PLM.mov |

After hitting, the car spun in the air either two or three times like a Frisbee and then landed facing the track. Remember, this was the same car that Auberlen later 'flew' in RA's second blowover in two years the next year so we later discovered that the BMW could fly. Almost simultaneously, everyone on the front stretch witnessed James Weaver's dramatic crash between turns 12 and 1 where he sprayed the media tower with rocks and did the same to the emergency vehicles, breaking windshields. 99% of the people and course workers were focused on Weaver's crash while Lehto's simultaneous incident was unknown except to a few of us. When I got there, Lehto looked dazed and I was going to have him sit and I was going to stabilize his head and neck until the emergency crews arrived. But, as you can see, he was fine and was driving the next morning! My theory is that a wall of strong wind came through the course and caused Lehto to fly and Weaver to have a momentary blip during his pass between turns 12 and 1. No way to prove it but how does a car almost hit straight on into a wall on a straight-a-way? But, the Porsche GT1 98 almost hit straight on into the wall after it's blowover with Dalmas the year before. I was going to suggest one time that a wind sock like at airports be put along the track in that area, which is the highest in elevation, so that drivers and crews could judge the wind through there. I thought the front suspension would be bent or damaged and you can hear me asking Lehto about it and he then checks it and says it's OK. So, the hit was nearly head on. Yeah, I like that statement too... "Put your gloves, helmet and all your belts back on, check your brakes and your steering to make sure everything is working OK and then go back reaaaaaallll slooooowwwww!" My friends when hearing this and then hearing him leave laugh and ask, "Was that reaaaaaalll slooowwww?" Probably one of my favorite sounds is hearing that V-12 loping at low RPMs as he turns around. Thanks CyberMotor, that is a great story! So cool that you got to be on the scene to help him.

Thanks! You can see in the video that Lehto's hands are black from the carbon brake dust. When I got back to the paddocks and went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror, my whole face was black after holding the BMW's nose! Looked like I had warpaint on. The only things left that were white were my teeth shining through with a big ole grin after that experience.

I posted the link before I actually watched the video... in the interview part the owner says it is one of the first concept models by Schuppan.

Must have set a course record; he was taking it pretty easy/cautious in some corners though, so I bet he could have been at least 5 seconds faster, if he drove the car in anger |

Watched it again last night. Can't really put it into words, it is a bit overwhelming. I'm adding things to the bucket list before I can scratch anything off. Good thing I am only 20.
