I don't agree with Mario doing this (especially risking his neck at HIS age) but it's not my place to bash or condemn an F1, Indy 500, Daytona 500, CART, etc.. champion and one of the greatest of ALL drivers.
I am simply appalled by some of the abusive bashing he is getting at other sites (one certainly comes to mind and it is the nickname Paul Tracy gave to IRL cars...or c**pwagons). I still don't understand why he did it. RA is back on the CART schedule so it can't be for spite (over CART/Pook nixing it). Mario has been a vocal in his criticism of the IRL(but not Indy, though) and I thought he was disappointed over Mikey going to the IRL. Blood? Money? PR? Spite? I don't know. Let's hope it was for today and today only. |

Maybe he did it because it was a chance to put a car through it's paces at Indy again? That's all it was.

Why is he doing it?
Because he's got a chance to drive an Indycar at Indianapolis, the track he won the 500 at in 1969, for the first time in about a decade Who wouldn't turn down the offer under those circumstances? |

Well he held up in the first wreck, must not be as old as people think.
So what, he is testing in Earl He is a good father still needs to hit mickey upside the head though But I say qaulify the car #1 than let Tony drive a nice slap in the face of the regular IRL drivers I would say, to put it ahead of them on the grid anywhoo, it is nice to see him behind the wheel again |

Supposedly he hit the top of the catch fence too. Lucky man.
The fact that he walked out relatively unharmed might upset a few that were ready to use it as propaganda... |

Let's hope so. Though I doubt anyone here is upset because of that.

Mario did it because his son owns the team, and he wants to help. Plain and simple. Sometimes you just have to let Mario be a father.

Of course Mario would want to get back in the car - who wouldn't? I am just glad he survived - the "Andretti Luck" wasn't always so good for race wins at Indy, but it was good enough to allow him to walk away from that one.

Mario, Mario, Mario. I told you not to!
I'm glad he's ok. But he better not try it again. |

"What else is going to happen to us?" said Michael, who plans to conclude his driving career at next month's race. "Every one of them is not our fault." W^nkdretti whine

Jesus christ, that was an insain crash! Can anyone recall another accident that dramatic? We've seen some bad oval crashes, but that one was certainly wilder. Thankfully there weren't other cars around and Mario's flight was straight without hitting anything.

...it reminds me of Peter Dumbreck's (ironic name in light of everything, I think) ...weird crash at LeMans a few years ago when he flipped a Mercedes similarly and hit the top of some very tall pine trees. He also walked away but not before French police administered a breathalizer test!
