OK. I've finally finished the book and the story of the Piper shunt is quite near the end. Piper was driving a 917 on the fast section just before Maison Blanche when he hit the guardrail. The car vaulted the armco and tore itself to pieces in the process (not unlike the staged Michael Delaney accident in the film). David suffered a triple compound fracture and we all know what happened after that.

Apparently, any thought of driver error was ruled out and the mostly likely cause of the accident was suggested as a slow puncture or David not warming up the tyres properly in a rush to get the shot. The footage of the shunt is not in the film.

Interestingly, Piper received not one cent from Solar Productions or Cinema Center by way of compensation and nor did he sue them (as anyone would now).

The reference to a 512S catching fire (cybers) was not a problem for David Piper, but for Derek Bell. He was in a Jacques Swaters 512S (loaned to Solar for the film). An eletrical short in the dash seems to have set the thing off and Derek was quite badly burned to the face as a result.

If you haven't read A French Kiss With Death, I urge you to buy or borrow it and do so. It's an excellent read. You'll want to watch the film again as soon as you put it down!

Love this film. The race countdown matched to SMcQ heartbeat is very atmospheric!

Also look out for the great 'feet on the pedal's' shots.

Work is finished, beer is bought, smelly cheese baguette prepaired and left outside for 2days, just need to sprinkle some sand on my carpet and turn the volume sky high and I'm prepaired for the full experience...... 3Hrs and counting.

I've prepared two video machines in case one breaks. We have four in the house but only one telly that gets C5. I could try daisy chaining them all together I suppose!

As we get C5 through ITV digital I just hope the service lasts until 5:30 this evening!!

FG
FG it's the VCR that will need to get C5 not the telly if your going to record it.If the aerial is plugged into the VCR,then the lead from the VCR should work with any telly.BTW if I were you I would invest in a satellite dish pronto!.

No the case with us I'm afraid. We have a telly with a terrestrial digital receiver built in, so the telly gets C5, not the video. We have to set the video to record whatever is currently being shown digitally on the telly.

We don't get the analogue C5 signal where we live.

Strange but true!

No need to apologise!!

The funny thing is, we didn't realise that we had bought a digital telly until we got it home. Dumb eh?

Bloody typical, about half an hour from the end my digital picture started to break up.

Let's hope the rumour of the DVD coming out soon is true.

I hadn't seen that for ages and boy does it show it's age.

Still it is a hollywoodised version of the real thing - I hope no-one who watched it and decided to go expecting english PA annoucements:-)

How exactly did they film it? It worked a treat!!!

And never have I seen such a good film with as little dialogue, the cars truly were the stars!!

There is a very good book about the making of the film "A French Kiss With Death". A lot of the footage was filmed during the race weekend with added extras filmed at a later date, mainly the action racing scenes and accidents. There was a camera car entered into the race which actually finished.

There was quite a few famous drivers included in the cast and driving scene. David Piper still carries the scars.

He had a crash with a 917 and the end result was he lost his leg below the knee. Ironicly enough the crach happened within yards of John Woolfe's fatal accident in a 917. David still races in historics and still pretty fast.

Derek Bell substaned bad burns to his face when his Ferrari caught fire

Neither incident is included in the film footage.

Just watching the start of the race:

BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM, quiet,... VVVVVVRRRRROOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

How many films are there, at 2 hours long, that you would normally sit through with almost no dialogue, and a PA system as a narrator?

I saw David Piper ina Ferrari P4 (i think) last year at Rockingham. quick!
