After the transporter problems at Silverstone, Dennis Leech managed to debut his RS500.

In Class B, Vauxhall fielded a second Cavalier for Chris Hodgetts- I think it was run in rwd form here- it was certainly off-the-pace. Nick Whale's Pyramid M3 returned after missing a round, as did Nettan Lindgren with no clashing Swedish race. The Bellm Sierra was absent

For the first time since the Donington 1-hour race, Trakstar were back to full strength with 2 cars, Mike Smith returning with backing from Dianetics; Gravett's car carrying sponsorship from Champion Spark Plugs and Qubie Computers.
Graham Hathaway was a non-starter, having missed qualifying- not sure why?

In Class B, Kurt Luby took over the second Prodrive M3 again from Tim Sugden. Jimmy McRae was back in the yellow MF Industrian Ecosse M3. Vauxhall again had a second Cavalier for Hodgetts- it was more competitive here, possibly in conventional fwd form?

I think Ray Armes finally had the 'proper' 2-litre engine in the PG Tags Honda- it didn't make much difference though, the Civic qualified 24th and then stopped with an oil pump failure on the first lap of the race....

The Bellm Sierra returned, but didn't qualify- more engine problems?

For the first (and only) time, we had a second 1-hour/2-driver race, this one at Brands, as part of the Interserie sports car meeting (unfortunately I seem to have lost the race programe for this one, so not sure if it was billed as a BTCC meeting with sportscars as part of the programme, or an Interserie meeting with BTCC supporting)

Class A saw a few changes to the entry from the previous round- in particular, theres been a lot of musical chairs played with the second drivers- only a couple of pairings from the early season Donington race (Harvey/Borgudd and Walker/Flux) returning here, and a couple of absentees resulting in a slightly depleted Class A
Trakstar were back to a single car, without the extra sponsors seen at the GP meeting, and Mike Smith sharing with Gravett
Graham Goode also only had one car here, Mike Newman absent, and Dave Brodie sharing Goode's RS500
Dennis Leech skipped this one, to return a couple of rounds later

Other co-driver changes compared to the earlier race were Gary Ayles in the Rouse/ICS Sierra, rather than David Sears, and Paul Radisich in Laurence Bristow's Labatt's car- Radisich's BTCC debut. Conversely, as one driver destined to become a well-known BTCC name made his debut, another long-standing BTCC competitor made his last appearance- Graham Hathaway's Sierra (a Trakstar entry shared with Mike Smith at Donington) was shared with Vince Woodman- Woodman's final outing in the series.

Class B pairing were largely as they'd been at Donington. There were a few changes though- Kelvin Burt shared the 2nd Prodrive M3 with Tim Sugden, Kurt Luby only sharing in Sytner's car at this one.Tony Bridge co-drove the Ian Forrest Ecosse M3, while Jimmy McRae returned in the Hugh Chalmers car.
It was all-change at Techspeed- Nick Baird absent, and Robin Brundle/Nigel Corry driving the 318iS here.
Vauxhall had 2 Cavaliers again- Chris Hodgetts doing double-duty here, co-driving the Cleland car, and sharing the second car with Bob Berridge
David Leslie was another driver with a busy weekend, co-driving both the Hall and Clark Pyramid M3s

The Bellm Sierra and Mahony M3s were missing from the entry- Bellm presumably losing patience with the troublesome Sapphire, as it wouldn't be seen again for several rounds.

One query about the result- I've got a note that there was a protest of some kind over the Trakstar RS500, and the Sytner/Luby M3- What was this about, and what was the outcome- one or both might have been DQd?

THere was a protest about oversized fuel tanks. I got the AUtosport magazine that covered the race. I need to boot up my scanner at some point soon.

Thanks bigears, you beat me to it!
I'm pretty sure that both cars had the fuel systems sealed and were checked at a later date (some problem with the calibration of the equipment at Brands if I remember correctly), and I think both cars were declared legal.

In response to an earlier question from Bigears, I have the whole 1990 season on tape from the half hour Grandstand shows. I also have the 1989, some of the 1988 and some of the 1991, Ive since found a video of the Tooheys 1000 from around that era too.

A slightly reduced entry here at Snetterton. The Newman and Leech RS500s were absent again, joined by Graham Hathaway. The class did gain one car, Dave Brodie, after sharing Goode's car at Brands, returned with his own Sierra for the first time this season.

In Class B, Nettan Lindgren was missing (racing in Sweden?), as was the Ray Armes PG Tags Honda. The Bellm Sapphire was absent again
Vic Lee was a returnee after missing Brands, Nick Baird was back in the Techspeed 318iS, after Robin Brundle & Nigel Corry shared it at Brands. At Prodrive, Tim Sugden was in the 2nd M3, and Chris Hodgetts again drove a second Vauxhall.
Ecosse Motorsport were slightly less Scottish than usual, John Llewellyn in the MF Industrial car.

A win for Gravett, with Andy Rouse finishing 4 laps down, presumably after a long pitstop- I don't recall the nature of the problem though. Class B went to Cleland's Cavalier

Back to Brands, this time on the full GP circuit, supporting F3000 (race won by Allan McNish I think?)
Several interesting changes to the entry- In Class A, Dave Brodie's RS500 was a no-show after his Snetterton DNS, but there were a number of returning or new RS500s.
Graham Hathaway was back, though an engine failure resulted in a DNS- the car wasn't seen again for the rest of the season.
Mike Newman's Listerine Sierra was back- but without Mike, Andy Middlehurst standing in here. Dennis Leech also returned.
The additional Sierra (an ex-Eggenberger car I think?) was entered by F3000 team Crypton Engineering for Italian Amato Ferrari. He would appear here and at Birmingham

In Class B, a couple of absentees- Jerry Mahony had split with BRR Motorsport, the car would return at the end of the year with Ian Flux. Nick Baird and the Techspeed 318iS was also missing here, to return a couple of rounds later.
Ray Armes returned with the Honda, but still no sign of Bellm's Sierra.
A couple of driver changes- Kurt Luby took over the 2nd Prodrive M3 from Tim Sugden for the next couple of rounds, and Formula Vauxhall driver David Coulthard had a run in the 2nd Cavalier.

I think the 2nd Ecosse M3 was on the entry list for Karl Jones, but I'm not 100% sure if it actually turned up- it certainly didn't qualify or race AFAIK. I also seem to be missing a couple of qualifying times from my notes

Another win from pole position for Gravett- Cleland took Class B again

What does BRR Motorsport stands for?

If Mahony left BRR then who entered his Arquati sponsored BMW M3 for the Birmingham round then?

I've been trying to remember who ran BRR, but can't...

Thanks for the result update- I wasn't going to post the Birmingham result until I'd had another look at your Excel file, as I knew my version had quite a few gaps.
Mahony was a non-starter at Birmingham, but I don't know exactly when he split with the team- IIRC, he didn't drive for them again, and Ian Flux was in the car for the last two rounds, Thruxton and Silverstone

I think Roy Kennedy was one of the partners, not sure about who else was involved though?

Ian Flux replacing Mahony is significant here, as Ian drove the same car for the team in 1991 and possibly early in 1992 as well?

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Quote from the 1989 BTCC threat/Autosport news:9 February 1989
John Llewellyn will be racing the BMW M3 Frank Sytner secured his 1988 title with at the Silverstone finals. The car is to be prepared by Roy Kennedy of Burke Ratcliffe Motorsport and run under the Ronic Sport banner. Sponsor will be Johnstons of Chichester.

Don't ecxatly explain what BRR stands for

Burke Ratcliffe Racing I think Jesper.
(I think Burke & Ratcliffe were a pair of wealthy businessmen who wanted a motorsport involvement, so funded the team to be run by Roy Kennedy).
I also think they were involved with a Thundersports car too at one time.

Thank you for pointing out the almost obvious;). Don't know if the team was new for 1989 and hadn't decided on Racing or Motorsport as the last part of the team name as of February 1989?

Fastest race lap times added for most competitors. Ray Armes is noted as "not given", meaning his transponder was out of order?

After the transporter problems at Silverstone, Dennis Leech managed to debut his RS500.

In Class B, Vauxhall fielded a second Cavalier for Chris Hodgetts- I think it was run in rwd form here- it was certainly off-the-pace. Nick Whale's Pyramid M3 returned after missing a round, as did Nettan Lindgren with no clashing Swedish race. The Bellm Sierra was absent
Leech still reported to have a lot of problems to finish 10th. From qualifying it's reported: Dennis Leech had a pretty torrid time on Saturday in his newly finished Sierra. A major electrical fault promoted a misfire that caused a vibration that broke a turbo pipe! Wet rubber on rims that wouldn't clear the suspension just added to the new car blues.

VDS Racing manager Bill Cleland (John's father?) suggesting that the pace car should be re-introduced for the rolling starts and to be deployed in case of accidents - especially in the new ever more competitive 2-litre class. How right was he about that! Chris Hodgetts running in rwd configuration.

The Autosport report supports that Andy Rouse and Tim Harvey was timed with identical times during qualifying. The Autosport results does get it the times wrong on occation and 1990 I remember as a low.

Added fastest race lap times

The Autosport results table says EW for Graham Hathaway and Ray Bellm, but don't know if that is meant to be they showed up for the race only to pack up before running a lap, or, as I it usually means, they didn't show up at all.

Chris Hodgetts reports that it's the first time the second Cavalier has been in fwd mode.

In the news section it's reported Amato Ferrari will race an ex-Eggenberger Crypton Engineering RS500 at Brands Hatch and Birmingham in August.

Dave Brodie is reported to codrive Graham Hathaways RS500 for the 2-driver Brands Hatch race, and that for round 7 at Snetterton he will drive a brand new car!

Added fastest race lap.

Somehow the van Kouwen/Whale BMW in 13th is credited with 67 laps in the Autosport results - one more lap than the car in front!?

Dave Brodie ended up codriving with Graham Goode (to have a look at the opposition?) rather than Graham Hathaway, as mentioned a little earlier. Regular Goode driver Mike Newman in France on holliday.

Good question weather the BTCC supported the Interserie race. The prestige of the BTCC by this point would suggest that it was rather more the Interseries that supported the BTCC. As a note David Piper was recorded for the fastest race lap during their two races in his Spice-Cosworth: 41.88

Added fastest race lap.

Ford Credit announced as sponsor for Robb Gravett for the rest of the season.

Gravett and Rouse had a few clashes on the opening lap, jamming a wheel in the arch of the Rouse car that made him spin at Russell. Gravett and Sytner made contact with the stationary Sierra and Rouse pitted for repairs.

I owe you, KA, for posting the 1990 results as I'm a little knackered over posting and updating these BTCC pages. But then again, it started about 3 month ago! Not that I have any regrets as my learning of the years covered has grown immensely. Thank you all for your contributions.

If it's the Burke-Ratcliffe Racing I'm thinking of, then they'd been around for a couple of years by then

Thanks for clearing that one up Jesper- I must have lost the programme for that one fairly soon after the meeting, as I didn't have any recollection waht it looked like. I guess Interserie took precedence on the grounds that as low-profile as it was, it was still an FIA-sanctioned international series.

Slightly off-topic, but it's Richard Piper (80's/90's sportscar privateer, cars usually entered under the PC Automotive name....

...rather than David Piper, the famous Ferrari sportscar privateer

Thanks for filling in the missing details- I'd got most of the results for these copies from Autosports and MNs, but the most original source magazines are currently stored 200 miles away, so can't check anything beyond what I originally copied down from them- and this exercise has filled in quite a lot of gaps for me, especially for some of the earlier seasons

Yes, they fielded a Lola T530 in Thundersports from about 1986, often driven by names like Mike Wilds and Ian Flux. The 'Ratcliffe' half of the team ownership was Andrew Ratcliffe, who appeared in the Lola from time-to-time...

When I saw the Piper name I specifically told myself to write Richard as I usual think of David - and did the opposite They're of total different generations I believe. Thank you for spotting the error.

Added fastest race lap and other details.

The Autosport report repeats that the Amato car is ex-Eggenberger, but adding that Ruedi himself was present at Brands Hatch overseing the effort! Amato had not raced in 4 month and only drove the RS500 on Friday before the race.

Mike Newman was apparently on the sick list - a chest infection caught on his resent holliday! - explaining why a substitute was found in Andy Middlehurst. It further goes that Andy had been in contact with Goode for some time regarding a one-off go at the BTCC as preparation for a possible 1991 season.

..and that Middlehurst and Amato had contact on the opening lap sending the Italian off the track.

Jerry Mahony and BRR has split but its not explained over what. The Arquati sponsorship appeared on the Jeff Allam car instead.

The expected Karl Jones return went south with an engine failure during Friday practice.

The Rouse 2-litre Sierra about to make its return, which likely will happen in Birmingham.

I found this all very interesting at the time. The car was entered by Patriciu Cantu's Crypton Engineering equipe - which also ran Farbrizio Barbazza in a Leyton House chassis in the F3000 series - and I guess the 2 cars would have been transported around together for the August races that saw the F3000 and BTCC running on the same bill?

Eggenberger was indeed still heavily involved from a engineering/set up perspective. I'm guessing that this was because Eggenberger had prior knowledge of both Brands and Birmingham layouts from Soper's forays in 1988?

I don't know whether the car was bought from Ruedi or simply leased for a few races. Did the car race in the Italian series as well though? Anyone got any more info on this?
