$800,000 to buy a GTS Ferrari and $2,000,000 to run it for a year might not be a problem for the LMES, but the cost of admition is a problem for the ALMS. As far as i know there are only 2 Vettes and 1 Saleen confirmed for next years full season. Some people are hopefull that there will be RGT's and GTC's coming over but at that cost there arn't many teams that i can think of that could afford it.
These are price's as high as GA use to see in the SR1 class. Why would a team choose to spend that much when they can buy and run a DP for half the cost and get as much or more tv coverage... |

Very simply because in some cases their ambition stretches beyond a single nationally based series.

Why Patrick? The Ferrari is a thing of beauty, the team will contest in International races of renown, and they have the money to race at top levels, so let them do it.
This thread isn't about the US, the ALMS or GA. People who have club racing budgets, should be racing in GA. It is an appropriate place. If only DP's can survive in North America, then we don't deserve sportscar racing. Many people don't really understand the mechanics of cost/benefit, and try and say things are too expensive, without real knowledge. |

Sure the Ferrari is great looking. Im just saying that the costs for a team to run in the ALMS GTS class out way the exposure they get. If IMSA/Panoz decided to get rid of the LMP class's and just run a "GT" series with GTS as the top class i could expect this kind of costs. But its not the top class...
If the ALMS and LMES merge the costs will be fine. However until that happens the ALMS is going to be hurting... Other then the GT class of course. |

Why would a person buy a 2500 square foot three story house with a three car garage, on the ocean front in Malibu, when they could buy a double-wide in Prattville Alabama for a lot less money and ...
Maybe the people who buy Ferraris and race them in IMSA and Europe do it because it's their money and that's what they want to spend it on. |

Mr Bosch is a MAJOR LEAGUE Ferrari enthusiast - Anyone else heard the story about wet weather F1 testing?

I never said someone that wants to run a GTS car is making a mistake.
Im just saying that a team thats looking around for a series or class to run in is going to skip the GTS class when they see what it cost's to compete. |

Bosch wants to race in a Ferrari, if Maranello builds a LMP/GTP the Dutchman will be one of the first customers.

It's fan tastic to see Ferrari back with factory "built" GT cars; all a result of the Ferrari Challenge.
But the costs for GT racing are getting very high. There simply isn't enough sponsorship money available to get enough good cars on the grids. Most series will have a max. of 10 fast cars and the rest will have no chance of anything interesting. If the cost keeps moving up, in the end GT racing may kill itself, unless corrective action is taken. We should have a situation where good private teams with reasonable money can compete with the factory-supported teams. |
