Craig Lowndes well clear on top of pre-season Eastern Creek test day times.
The times have come down from those of this morning, so I guess some of the soft tyres have been dragged out by those who have them. The V8SC record for the track has been broken again anyway. Craig's 1:30.1877s lap saw him 0.6s faster than fellow Holden driver Michael Caruso who was second fastest. Jason Bright was third fastest in the BOC Commodore, with Lee Holdsworth and Tony D’Alberto rounding out the top 5. So GRM is the first team to have two cars, with both in the top 4. In fact Holden bagged the top 7 spots with Bargwana and Tander taking 6th and 7th. Winterbottom took the honour of top Ford, 8th fastest and 1.5994 secs off Lownde's pace. Even 1.5 hours in real time was pretty good.
Looks like a good crowd..... so it would seem the only way to get a decent crowd to EC is to give free admission..... or call it the Muscle Masters if you want to charge people! They should have done a gold coin donation for entry though. It would not have made any difference to the numbers that went. Do we know how many were actually there at EC today. |

I turned up at 3pm (couldn't get there any earlier), by which time most of the crowd must have left because there wouldn't have been more than a few thousand still there.
The big disappointment, apart from no development series cars - do they get their own test day? - was that the public was ordered to leave the paddock by 5pm, so no chance to mingle with drivers afterwards. Also there were no flaggies nor any obvious presence of safety/medial crews. Just not good enough for an official test day for Australia's supposedly premier motorsport category, especially on a Saturday. So much for V8SA's "duty of care" to its competitors. |

was a good turnout, let down i think by the short grid walk. Commentators mentioned an estimated 20,000 people, so how are the majority of those going to get onto the grid, have a peek, then get off the grid within 15 min? Also chatting to one of the food outlets, they were only told there was an event at xmas time... |

I had no problems with the grid walk, taking pics of the cars I wanted to, walking from the Western end of the grandstand to the very last car (Jason Bright's) and back before the crowd was called off the grid
If you stood in the queue and just lollygagged, you would have seen nothing. Kinda like picking the wrong queue in the supermarket checkout. I am sure it could have been longer... but you have to remember it was 30C+ and the drivers were in full race attire in full sun, sans umbrella girls... For maybe 10,000 people, it was a chance to physically touch a V8Supercar... say hello, get pics... As for not being able to see drivers and get pics/autographs, most squads were getting pics of their pilots during the day. Few cars were on the circuit for 8 hours straight... there were team minders happy to take bits up to the drivers to sign while they were in conference with the engineer types... While it was a crowd-available day, it was an official test day, one of very few they get in a season... so shouldnt have been squandered either... |
