When Vauxhall announced mid-2000 it was running the Astra Coupé for 2001, they said there was a chance that the new Vectra, when ready, could be raced.

I think there is a very good chance the vectra will return. Why? well, it's Vauxhall's 100th year thing in 2003, and the vetra is a new shape, and needs marketing. with more cars in the championship, and astras two to a penny, it might be a good move for a vectra, and they'll have two models being promoted!!

All speculation, but all very possible

Can you just see Vectras and Astras in the same race run by different teams - what on earth will happen if the 'old' Astra beat the 'new' Vectra?

Sim/TL,

So, basically, you are clutching to this vague pre-2001 'chance' that the Vectra might return? Also bear in mind that since then, it's been shown that 'big' cars may well be a bad idea (406 Coupe).

As Les says, the idea of having Astras and Vectras racing could be a PR nightmare! When was the last time that two different (but current) models raced in the same class in the BTCC?

Or with Vauxhalls 100th year maybe a PR dream to see both of their biggest models battling and winning although I see your point.

I'm not too sure if they'd run a Vectra though, I'm just reporting what was said at the time. Although they were both the same size, the Cavalier raced up until the end on 1997, alongside the Vectra.

Err... the Cavalier was privately entered, in an era where there was absolutely bog-all chance of it getting on the podium, let alone winning a race.

How many times did the privateer Cavaliers finish ahead of the factory Vectras? In fact, how many times did a year-old privateer car finish ahead of a factory car? (in the Super Touring era)

It's only the Ecurie Ecosse Cavaliers that spring to mind, and at that time, Vauxhall were also running the Cavalier.

Matt Neal had a few finishes at least in 1995 with a Ford Mondeo ahead of the works Ford Mondeos. And think of Matt Neal again in 1999 and 1998 with the Nissan Primera often beating the works Primeras.

IMHO, I don't consider the MGs private though. Though I agree with SIM/TL that big cars won't do well in the BTCC when there are teams running smaller cars, unless the BTCC moves toward ETCC rules... (Flame suit zipped up!!)

Not sure about Matt Neal OFTEN beating the 1999 Nissans- they did come first and second in the series that year. But I take the point, and this year the 2001 cars have challenged on occasion, especially the MGs which have both outqualified the two works 2002 cars on occasion

The 1996 Ford Mondeo was an absolute shed, though!

Matt Neal had one or two good runs in the Primera, though, as you say.

The current MG situation doesn't count, since I was asking about Super Touring cars.
