I doubt that they're back next year, or Porsche for that matter.

If Porsche won't be there next year, there's even more incentive for Toyota to come back get their long awaited win. They wouldn't even need to do much development either. But then again, I'm not sure they would do the whole WEC...

Another terminal failure with the leading car. No third car or luck is going to help them this way.

I think it's time for them to pull out. This is both sad and embarrassing. Each year they are either slow,or unreliable.

"If they win, they'll quit"
"If they lose, they'll quit" I doubt there's been a year where neither has come up. |

This is Depressing.
So looks like Toyota learnt nothing from Peugeots mistakes and made a fast car that wont last even 10 hours. Im sure the third car taken all the development budget that was allocated to make the car good this year. I can see them exiting Le Mans this year. |

Its up to the board, I remember John Howlett TMG President announcing that Toyota would be in F1 in 2010 and the board changed that rather quickly.

Well the president was there. While things can always change I think this means it is most likely they will be back.

They need 10 cars to make it i think. They also need to be quick also. The only time they were reliable since their return was in 2015 where they were painfully slow. It's pretty sad as they will most likely win the WEC this year, but Le Mans still evades them.

Ah well at least one got to the end. Let's hope they learn lessons for next time, because they have been unstoppable in shorter races, but today they needed to have been better making sure they got to the end with all that dosh they have

It's a running joke at this point for Toyota in Le Mans. Fast cars generally, but fragile as glass. Just like the TS020, if you look at the TS050 funny, or a gust of wind comes by, the TS050 falls apart. I'm being sarcastic, but I think you get the idea. Toyota has learned nothing so far from past failures and past mistakes. Reliability this year was even worse than last year incredibly. It also gives me a good laugh, in that Toyota's production vehicles are generally quite easily serviceable, in comparison to production Porsche vehicles. Yet here in LMP1, it's the opposite. |

I think it ran reliably in 2013 but didn't have the pace, even then one of the drivers managed to throw it off

Yeah i forgot 2013. They had a perfect run with the #8 i think. No issues whats so ever and were quicker when it was raining. But in the dry the Audi was destroying the Toyota to the tune of 3-4 seconds per lap.

German website motorsport-total reporting that the clutch broke because the car started with the engine running instead of starting on hybrid and clutching in at 80 kph at the safety car restart. Apparently there was a disguised person signaling the car to go.

It's hard to understand what happens to Toyota in the reliability side.
2013: flawless LM; lots of problems in the 6h races. 2014: good reliability overall, but one compromising terminal failure at LM. 2015: flawless LM, very slow car. 2016: fast car, disaster at LM, Spa, Mexico. 2017: fast car, disaster at LM. Although there's a pattern here saying that fast=reliability problems, it's hard to understand how they performed so well at LM in 2013/2015 (not talking about pace, obviously) but ended up having problems in the 6h races. And when they got problems at LM those problems were very compromising. My conclusion: they were even "lucky" by not having those problems in the big one, but at the same time the problems at LM are just too significant to be just a matter of luck. Something may be wrong. That's just my humble opinion, just trying to find some logic here. I don't have the knowledge to think beyond this. |

2013 was an exception year. The general pattern has been fast but fragile cars for Toyota.
Also if the clutch broke so easily, that is horrible engineering. Even if that was a "fake" marshal, that is no excuse for bad engineering. The clutch should be able to handle starting with the hybrid, the engine, or either/or combination of. |

I believe they switched from ZF to Aisin AW because of the new engine.
