The chicanes were installed in 1990 because the FIA mandated it would no longer sanction a circuit which had a straight longer than 2 kilometers (1.2 mi).

Right, but they sanction the Nurburgring, and now there's this Baku circuit with a flat-out run of over 2.0-km. Of course, the Mulsanne isn't entirely straight either.

It's good to see Tilke is trying a new concept at Baku. This track is certainly not following his usual formula. And it's no Singapore either.

However, I have some doubts about this 2.2 kilometer flat-out run ending in the pit straight because when a car enters the pits, to the approaching cars it must feel like somebody is parking right there.
There is a reason for the chicane at Le Mans that comes before the pit straight. And the chicane at the end of the Dottinger Höhe straight at the Nürburgring Nordschleife is there for the same reason: to protect slow cars entering the pits.

Also, there is one kink in that section which has the other lane of track right behind it. The lack of runoff is bewildering, especially for a Tilke design, since he clearly knows better given the huge runoff area at the kink on the backstretch of Istambul Park. So why not give a little more room there and have the track continue straight on at the location of Turn 3 and rejoin the current layout a few hundred meters down the road in a similar right-hander?

Purist, what do you think of these suggestions for a track edit?

Where the pits separate from the track, they have at least six road lanes of width to work with. They also look to have plenty of length for a cool-down/deceleration zone after entering the lane, before they reach the actual pit boxes. So, I'm not sure a chicane there is needed, actually.

Keep in mind, the chicanes at Le Mans and the Nordschleife were built before either circuit had a separated pit lane. Both still just had a pit apron, with no wall between it and the racing surface.

I don't know that having the route continue on, instead of going left at Turn 5, will work. I think the road they would be turning on to is much narrower. It might also mean having cars traveling at high speed straight at the old city wall, before they slam on the binders and turn right. As it stands, the run they show between Turn 6 and Turn 7 has a chicane like Watkins Glen before the cars swing right onto that narrow part of the circuit.

That quick chicane may provide an extra several meters of run-off on the outside of the right-hand kink opposite Turn 7. On a true street circuit, having any run-off is really a luxury, anyway. And if you'll recall, that bend on Raffles Blvd. at Singapore has no run-off whatsoever, not to mention how tight the entry to Turn 10 is, or the Anderson Bridge on the Marina Bay Circuit.

I am not convinced that's right, in the case of Le Mans. I cant recall ever seeing no pit wall at Le Mans and I have been going since 1984. At the moment though I have no evidence to back it up.

The Ford Chicane was first installed in 1968. As of the filming of "Le Mans", in 1970, there was still no pit wall.

Ok I must have misread it - I thought the conversation was about the chicanes on the Mulsanne and the length of the straights

Yannick suggested a few possible changes to the Baku Street Circuit layout, because he had some safety concerns. He pointed out that they had added chicanes after the Tiergarten at the Nurburgring, and after Maison Blanche at Le Mans. He thought there could be issues with cars entering the pits getting run over.

In a bit of tragic irony, those chicanes make the need to use all the road to minimize time lost all the more apparent. After a pit wall was added at the Nurburgring, they had problems, and at least one fatal accident, because guys exiting the chicane hit the end of the pit wall.

Well, to get this thing back on course, here's the latest of Bernie's, um... Yeah, what category do we file this one under?

Too bad Stardust was so short-lived, and the site of that racing circuit has since been swallowed by the city.

That 1980s Las Vegas venue was better than many of today's Tilke tracks.

A Tilke turkey at Las Vegas with Austin just a bit down the road?

It won't happen but it'd be thoroughly underwhelming if it did.

their personal problems aside, cant imagine a Las Vegas street race, using some combination of the Strip and or/ back roads around and through casino parking lots being anything other than an eyesore...although i suppose it would still be marginally better then a race in say a Magic Kingdom parking lot.

some sort of elaborate exhibition run on the Strip plus a fan experience type event could be interesting though.

Paradise City, Austin and Las Vegas are a LONG way apart, certainly in European terms, and especially when you consider that there isn't a terribly direct land route between the two.

Now a we might have a GP in Madrid. Bernie is said to be in talks with business men with a view to having a GP in the city who are said to have €50million. Barcelona's contract runs out in 2016 could that have anything to do with this proposal?

Moscow Raceway now has it's full Grade 1 ( Link ).

If remember from the Sochi TV coverage it's the promoter that holds the race rights not the circuit, so could set the two circuits against one another or do a deal with both to alternate.
