It doesn,t look like the M535 had a very extensive competition life . The homologation only runs to 14 pages , with no new options being added after 1981, and although it was transferred into Gp B , there seems to be no further factory involvement after that .
The M3 has 129 Homologation pages with options being added from 1987 right up to 1993 . Someone said that one car was on carbs , I think I remember from appendix J regs of the time that fitting carbs in place of injection was fully allowed in Gp 2, so would be period correct . |

First E28 M535i was '85 I'm pretty sure (for the UK), although I think you may have been able to get the 535i SE as early as '84, but certainly not earlier.
So yes, as flatinfourth says - any homologation in '81 would definitely refer to the E12. You couldn't get an E28 of any description until very late in '81 and the E12 was still being sold up to that point. The OP was asking about the E28 in motorsport... |

I was looking more at info on the E28, but don't mind any input. My car started life as a 1986 535ise. I only know of one other E28 535 that competed in the Toyos a few years ago by George Haynes and he sold that to somebody in Holland I think. Then of course there was the M5 that Gerry Cain (?) raced in the Toyos in the late 90's. Before that it was the 528's at Spa and ETCC in the early 80's.

Lovely car and price seems OK but what I wonder would shipping costs to UK be?
It must be a really early E28 even with the 2.8. |

So a 1981 Homologation could include the later engine . But I have looked through all of the paperwork I can find , & have no listing for the E28 engine in any 5 series . So it looks like the factory were not keen on having the 5 series E28 in FIA competition . |
