Stephen
Why don't you make use of your fame to 'earole the commentators, at meetings, and tell them what to say about the merry band of marshals.

Mainly because I have responsibility for trainee marshals for the BRSCC so time is somewhat limited.

That's great if you have commentary. I don't expect to get paid, just fed, which everywhere I have worked, as I stated previously the quality of the food can be a little suspect at times though.

In this debate so far their has been no mention of the Rally Marshal, they face exactly same problems as track marshals do.

A few UK road rallies require each crew to bring along one or two friends to act as marshals. It's usually waived for crews coming from a distance, and sometimes for those entering historic classes (I don't understand the logic for the latter, but am very pleased to take advantage of it at times !)

But note that rally marshals don't need the level of training which flag marshals at race events must have in that they don't have any safety responsibility (other than perhaps crowd control).

As far as road rallies are concerned, most "marshals" are situated at the various controls and are responsible for recording times, approach/departure direction, etc.. Others are situated at "interesting" points to (try to) keep spectators under control. It's a VERY different role to that of a speed event marshal. On stage rallies you need both crowd control and the fkag marshal type of role.
