Maybe I'm not the best person to comment on Aerodynamics, but it looks like a large rectangular box, and just by looks, I'm not convinced that it's going to be any faster than the lister. Are there any other Prototypes using the 'Ford V8' that will be in the back of the LS1?

I'm confused as to what engine Lavaggi is using - some reports are saying it's a PME tuned 6 litre Ford V8, others are saying its a Ford Cosworth HB unit, which is an ex-F1 engine and the same engine used in the old Jaguar XJR-14. Bizarrely, DailySportsCar mentions both in its piece about the Lavaggi. I can't see the Cosworth HB being competitive with LMP1 restrictors, so I'm guessing it's the larger PME engine.

The car looked like finished on a rush, while the offcials were inspecting it they took off the nose and reattaching it proved a major challenge. It looks bulky and far from finished, lots of work to do for the Lavaggi team if they don't want to become the next Lister prototype....

Yes, the engine information is very confusing:
  • according to pitstop.tv (writen by Joost Custers from DSC) it is an ex-F1 Ford Cosworth HB V8
  • Endurance-info.com talks about a 6 liter Ford V8 prepared by PME based in Indianapolis and electronics for Motec; they compare it with the engine of the Panoz LMP-1
  • projectlemans.de says it is prepared by Roush, which also supplies Konrad with engines.

It is interesting. Because team manager Achim Stroth told us that the engine was from Roush, the company which also prepared the Konrad engines.
But we´re not sure whether the latest Konrad engines are from PME or Roush (Franz changed the engine tuner). So there is something to research

Just re-read the DSC coverage, and that says it's the PME-tuned Ford, although a quote Lavaggi refers to an HB. (I don't know much about American Ford V8s, but is there anything in the range that might coincidentally share the 'HB' designation with the F1?)
It also says that the engine currently in the car apparently came from Konrad, and suggests it may be an ex-Saleen unit.

Just a wild guess, but if Konrad uses Roush engines, could Lavaggi be using an ex-Konrad Roush as a temporary measure until the PME engines arrive?

The engine confusion is justified - Giovanni did talk about the HB but it is indeed a PME tuned 6 litre V8 in the car

The Lavaggi press information indicates the forementioned 6.0 liter Ford V8. PME engines is based out of North Carolina:

We talkes to the team last week. The bought two PME engines, based on the 6l V8 Ford engine which is also the basis for some PME Saleen engines made for Konrad.

They start with an unknown chassis and an unknown engine (in LMP). Think that doesnt makes it easier to find where you have to work. Think they better use a known Judd engine, because they know that it is the chassis if they are to slow.
And the Judd engine will do the 1000km

It's almost reminiscent of the Brun and Konrad WSC cars, which showed up at the Nurburgring in 1991 and thence we never really heard of again. Be a real shame if that happened to the Lavaggi. I'm the first to admit I was a skeptic about it being much more than a wind tunnel model but the series needs the cars.

The car got its shakedown recently in Vairano (some minor electrical problems were found) and will debut at Jarama. Xavier Pompidou will be the second driver; Giovanni Lavaggi of course the first.

As Gwyllion said, it seems to be down to some electrical niggles - the sort of thing that you'd expect with any utterly new car that's just had its shakedown. Like you I'm disappointed not to see it - especially in the flesh at Donington - but I can see where's he's coming from - I can see him wanting to make at least some kind of splash with the car and give himself and Xavier a decent run in the car.

According to endurance-info they were able to do almost 100 km, so a decent number of laps. There were some minor electrical problems. They did not want to take any risks and postponed the debut.

They have planned a longer test before the Jarama LMS race.
