Cancelling Fuji (which costs Toyota a measley $10 million to run for the GP) gives us some idea of what may indeed happen.

It would be sporting of Toyota to let everyone know what they intend to do now,so that maybe another team could be brought in.Or maybe someone will buy Toyota ?

It seems Trulli will resign with Toyota and Danika Patrick will not race with USF1.

Perhaps not, but it would have ensured USF1 was flush with cash for their opening season had Ms Patrick been signed....

Watching the MotoGP last night had me wondering if STR would work better with 2 high profile newbies in the seat... perhaps Mr V.Rossi, and Mr S.Loeb would make for a spectacular lineup

There was a suggestion somewhere that RBR/STR were looking to use the same powerplant for next season too.... imagine just bolting on the setups of Mr Vettel.. tuning to suit... and BANG!

The link to that original Kimi story is here and I think we have seen it before, so it doesn't really add too much.

There's a rather more interesting story on the same website here in which Brendon Hartley says now is not the time for him to jump into F1. I suppose he would say that, but I think he's right.

Meanwhile, Jaime Alguersuari is quite happy...

After yesterday, I would like to add another name, which may come as a surprise to some of you: the Argentine, Esteban Guerrieri.

He is 24 years old and has previously raced in the F3 Euro Series with Manor Motorsport. Last year he did a part season in British F3 for Ultimate Motorsport. You probably wouldn't get too much of an argument from anyone who followed the Series closely if you said he was the best driver in it. So that includes Oliver Turvey, Jaime Alguersuari and Brendon Hartley. Yes, really.

He left mid-season, having been promoted by Ultimate to join the experienced Fabio Carbone in their WSR squad and was immediately on the pace. Pole positions followed and and an end of season race win.

This season, just racing saloons back home in Argentine, until this last weekend. He was called up by Ultimate to drive the El-Ain car in the Superleague meeting at Zolder. 6th in race one, after a spin as he acclimatised to the car, was followed by an outright win in race 2 in mixed conditions. This from 13th place on the grid. His move to take the lead was a peach.

You can mock if you want to, and, yes, the likelihood is that it will never happen, but if somebody gives the guy a chance...

I've always thought he's a bit too erratic tbh. A quick guy but just inconsistent, a bit like Pastor "Win at Monaco and do nothing else" Maldonado

He may well have been the best in BF3 last year but that's not entirely surprising considering it was his 4th year in F3. Like when Asmer won - he was on his 3rd attempt or thereabouts. You've only got so many chances. After too many, F1 teams will lose interest quickly. Look at Pantano

interesting little addition in that article about Toyota approaching Kimi for a contract next year:

And, with sources claiming that Kimi Raikkonen has rejected an approach to join Toyota next year, the Japanese manufacturer has now made a firm offer to Trulli for him to remain on board.
obviously such a statement, if it is to be believed, would indicate that KR is out at Ferrari next year as no one in their right mind would go to Toyota if they had a confirmed seat with Ferrari for 2010.
it begs the question of why Toyota would risk the humiliation of being turned down unless they actually believed they had a chance of taking him away from Ferrari with money (so a bigger contract then he has now) or they know something about next years driver situation.

First off, hello all.

Re. Guerrieri, I remember him doing the last year of F3000 and being quick, despite being only 19. In fact his pace in all of the series he's competed in has been impressive, but he always seems to be having to take a step back rather than a step forward. From F3000 he dropped back to Formula 3 and as you say he's gone from WSR to racing saloons in his home country. I would assume then that he lacks sufficient funding to progress up the ladder.

The chances of him getting an F1 drive are pretty minimal but I fully agree that he's a quick racer who deserves his chance at a higher level.

Guerrieri's career reminds me of Victor Rosso and to a lesser extent Quique Mansilla who both had similar yoyo junior careers. Both were considered at least 'very good' but never got the right breaks mainly due to money and ended up bogged down in F3 and stuff, Rosso pretty much made a career out of F3!!

Whilst i'm not sure I agree with jab's assesment of certain drivers; Maldonado in particular (come on he's a bit more than a Monaco specialist, prone to rash moves accepted) I do agree that career momentum nowadays is solely dependent on momentum and most of all having the right managment/connections.

Young drivers and those looking to break in only get once chance, the only exceptions are big names and WDC's but that has always been the case hasn't it?

After all unlike Brawn RBR seem to understand the meaning of the word TEAM and work together.[/QUOTE]

Er, am I missing something -- aside from the six GP wins? The only indications that Brawn doesn't work as a team come from Rubens, who simply isn't quick enough, and in his growing frustration seeks to blame everyone else. It was clear all along that Brawn were not going to retain their early season invincibility, but Jenson has worked wonders and thoroughly deserves the WDC, which I've no doubt he'll win. Ross is just to canny an operator to let it slip away now, and no amount of Webber-mania will change that.

A couple of months ago I said that Campos had signed DelaRosa and Perez with Telmex money and I was laughed at.
To be fair, I don't recall people laughing at what you said, but wanting a source.

I'm a bit surprised at the supposed de la Rosa at Campos story. Yes he's Spanish and has a lot of experience of testing Mclarens but he never set the world alight in a Jaguar. He had a few good races for Arrows but that was ten years ago now, and he'll be 39 by the time the season starts. He's competed in 10 Grand Prix in the last 7 years so he's hardly race sharp. It makes perfect sense to take an experienced driver but perhaps one who'd had a regular seat a little more recently would have been better. But being a Spanish team their hand may have been forced a little.

By the way if they go for Perez in the second car he'll be the best part of 19 years dlR's junior. When was the last time a team ran drivers with such an age gap?

May be barking up the wrong tree here, but...

The Alguersuari thread mentions Torro Rosso chasing Repsol (spanish oil company).

I believe that de la Rosa's family are involved in the oil industry - it is the main source of their wealth - and this is the reason why Repsol have supported de la Rosa throughout his career.

If we're talking about both de la Rosa and Repsol being involved in F1 in 2010, then surely it will be as part of a package deal? Given the family connections, it seems unlikely that they will both end up in different teams i.e. Campos & Torro Rosso?

Yup, sound points. Maybe DLR would be better looking at becoming part of the team in a Management capacity!

Excellent trivia question about age gaps. Probably Piquet and Schuey at Benetton towards the end of 1991 was the last time there was a big age difference in teammates?

Maybe Lammers & Wendlinger in the Marches in '92?

Piquet and Schumacher was 16 and a half years, I don't think Lammers and Wendlinger was more than 10. Certainly IF this is the line-up it'll be the biggest age gap between teammates in the last 20 years, which is a nice little bit of trivia. Anyway, sorry to go off topic.

Sources say Jacques Villenueve is ready to sign with USF1. Wise move on USF1 in my opinion. Ex champion with plenty of experience and well recognized in the US. Im thinking Barichello may take the second car but that's my thinking.

It'd be a bit of a joke if they ran two non-Americans. I know JV and Rubens are technically American (North and South respectively) but the team is USF1, they need someone born in the United States. It would make more sense if they signed JV or Rubens (preferably Rubens, for various reasons) and put a young American (Rahal, Summerton or Hillderbrand, for example) in the second car.

Unlike Force India, who say they'll run an Indian driver when a good one comes along, USF1 have stated from the start that they want an American in the car from race 1. I think that's what they'll do, and what they want to do, though what you suggest certainly isn't impossible.

I posted this in another thread: JV denies US F1 talks:
http://www.auto123.com/en/racing-new...ampaign=social

It may be a bit of a joke if they run two non-US Americans, but it'll be a bigger joke if they run a guy who doesn't even deserve a Super License just for the sake of having a Yankee in the car. It's best to build a strong team with the long-term goal of having some of the younger talents who are taking the traditional path to F1 like Josef Newgarden and Alex Rossi when the team can actually compete, instead of further embarrassing the image of American drivers by putting another dud in the cockpit.

Not sure if it's been posted already, but there's some speculation (no real credible sources that I've seen) that Natacha Gachnang will be one of the test drivers for Campos. If true, Willi Weber is a heck of a manager...he sold the team a driver who can't even score a point in F2 (I'm sure her being a her played some factor, and her previous association with Campos).
