Russfield, are you suggesting that Paul Newman used his salad dressing as a bargaining chip of sorts to get McDonalds to sponsor the entire series?

No, to sponsor his car.

The way I am looking at this is that if I was McDonalds, and Paul Newman said to me "Sponsor my car or lose my salad dressing," I would probably say, "See ya later, Paul" and start calling up Kraft or Wish Bone or whoever else makes salad dressings.

Being an MBA student I see things like that :-)

Doubt that Newman and/or his people made ultimatums to McDonald's. They had a B2B relationship prior to McDonald's being involved on Bourdais' car. That relationship led to the sponsorship of Bourdais' car and certainly led to this deal. Which is fine.

Anyone who thinks McDonald's just picked OWRS out of the blue to become an official sponsor because they were excited about a great opportunity is kidding themselves.

I am not suggesting that there were any ultimatums. Maybe McDonalds warmed-up to Champ Cars via Newman-Haas.

I'm suggesting the deal was B2B between Newman and McDonald's for marketing and financial reasons. I don't think many McDonald's executives know the differences between an OWRS car and a palm tree.

Why do McDonald's want to work with OWRS/CCWS? Simple, because like themselves they know that the Champ Car World Series markets itself to the world and not just the US!

I can't imagine Newman playing the heavy hand. It would have to be because of a positive relationship in the past and the good will he has built up.

They were floundering heavily at that point. They also bailed out of NASCAR then, so if that wasn't reaching a big enough audience...

My wife gets an idea for a commercial...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A McDonald's commercial at that...Bruno goes in to get his happy meal that comes with a Champ Car toy...He quikly digs into the bag to recieve his car, and pulls out Bordais' McDonalds car...the cry from Junky? "Its not fair!"...

Only CART fans would get that, which means you just wasted a commercial on an audience that already knows.

Exactly. That does nothing to sell the series to the casual viewer, which is the key here.

If you do something really bad would they make you eat McD's food during your penalty?

Mmm, the McDonald's Lola powered by Ford driven by Sebastien Bourdais powered by McDonalds... And at pit stops, you pull up to the window, get a McDonalds drink bottle, have a few sips while you're getting fuel and tyres, then chuck the drink back into the window and drive off.

Then, following a similar route to the DTM, success ‘ballast’ is given to the winners. The winner has to survive purely on Big Macs until the next race, while the tail-enders can ‘stay in shape’ with a McDonalds salad…!?! I’M LOVIN’ IT!
