Oh, didn't realise there had been activity once more on this thread.

I was wondering that, as I have access to TSN and Speed (both of which can be a bit variable about what they show). I haven't come across news regarding them, but then I am not very good at finding such things out. Laziness as much as anything probably.

re television
it will be broadcast 1 hour after the race on BBC Grandstand, live on MNet in SA and on Motors TV in Europe.
Nigel Mansell will be quoted in this weeks Autosport as saying that following a testing sesh in Spain it is the best Formula car after F1
I am confident that this series will fly
the inaugral round at Kyalami in a months time should be quite an event and I hear there could be something of interest happening on Park Lane beforehand between Prost and Mansell......

I am hoping Speed show it.

Then, I was hoping A1GP would be too (I'm avoiding finding out goings on in that, but not religously so, in the hope it will get shown by them at some point) so perhaps they won't :-(.

GP Masters is coming

Darted across to the Grand Prix Masters website www.gpmasters.com and they have posted a video of Mansell and Arnoux testing on Monday. The video’s not big (4MB I think) and makes interesting viewing.

Firstly it looks like this series is going concern. The pessimist in me has been saying all along that I was never going to happen! So good on Delta Motorsport and the team behind it for getting it off the ground.

Secondly the car looks and sounds like a serious bit of kit! It visually looks right, with the final car appearing like a hybrid between an early ‘90’s F1 car and a late 90’s Indy car (I guess that’s what you’d expect when the chassis start life as the 98 Reynard Champ Car.) And the engine note…wonderful! No scream of a modern F1 car but crisp and melodic none the less.

My only concern is that the things going to be too quick for the old boys to handle!

And so far we don't know a calendar yet

Only that Kyalami will have 1 race in November and that Losail (Qatar) will most probably get the 2006 season opener.

Since southern Spain is a favorite place for elderly people, will they have a race in Jerez?

Hmm.. not sure I agree about the look of the car - it looks too dated to me, in that you can clearly see the old Champ Car it's based on. Somehow it doesn't look right to me with those modifications like the engine cover. Personally I'd like the car to look more like the WS by Renault Dallara - a modern chassis, but very reminiscent of early 90s F1 cars (which to my eyes were the most beautiful). Still, I'm really looking forward to the first race, and to see how these guys cope with such a quick car. Will be interesting to see if those with the most recent F1 experience (Mansell, Prost, Patrese, de Cesaris, Capelli etc) will be the quickest to adapt to a modern chassis.

(BTW - there's a big thread on the series over in Historics - personally I think this forum [National/International single-seaters] is a FAR more suitable place for it).

Speaking NOT in my capacity as a mod I think a lot of people must be viewing the drivers in the context of being "historic" rather than the cars which are obviously not...just a thought

Absolutely agree.

And if it encourages more people to look at the historic forum, so much the better

especially as many of the cars they drove originally are now very much part of the historic scene

Sorry for the confusion all round, but I've moved the thread from the Historic forum (technically, this isn't a historic series) into National and International Single Seaters, and merged another thread which was already there. Hopefully this is the best place for the discussion.

Well, sorry guys, but it was my idea to move it here (as Historics mod) for the simple reason that the series is a new series with modern cars and although some of the drivers are 'historic' in one sense, some are still actively racing. I was also concerned that many wouldn't take the trouble to do the 'jump' to historics, as well as the possibility (realised today) that other threads would be started here. Finally of course, you will note that historic threads do occur in the F1 forum (several of us here are contributing to the 'nineties' thread currently running there), so there are no absolutely hard and fast rules on this. Whilst there is a case for it to be in the historics, I think the case for having it here is stronger. So you malcontents can blame me! Now back to topic!

I am! I am going tomorrow - its on the South Circuit. I will be interested to see how they look - they are as someone said earlier adapted Champ Cars. The series on paper should be excellant - time will tell if reality lives up to expectation...

Well, I had a hunt around the net to see what I could find, but my work internet blocks most of the things I want to look at (Ten-Tenths being the exception!). So I gave up and decided to phone the circuit who confirmed that the testing is open to the public.

My manager has kindly let me take a day flexi leave.

just come back - Mansell was quickest followed by Fittipaldi - the drivers were pretty keen to compare times so I think it is fair to assume that the red mist has descended! I have photo's but dont know how to post them
If today is anything to go by it will be a great series

Would love to see your photos. I think im right in saying that to upload photos when you reply to a thread there is a small image below the size and colour drop down menus that looks like 2 mountains, click that and you should get the option to insert pictures. Pictures are limited to a size of 400 x 400 pixels. Hope that helps!

From memory, Mansell, Fittipaldi, Patrese, Johannsen, Tambay, Dammer, de Cesarus, and a couple more. Also watch the newswire for another driver to be announced, I think a deal was struck yesterday. I also gather that they have a well known commentator lined up.......
I loaded all my photos onto an email and sent it to my office but its got lost in cyberspace somewhere! I will see if I can do it tonight
