It's the opposite right? Its the car with lower top speed that needs track position. DP vs P2 at Sebring. Audi vs Puegeot at Lemans. So much easier to keep competitors behind and get past traffic.

Interesting comment in the autosport.com article:
Quote:
(...) Drawing conclusions from the test was difficult because the FIA and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which jointly write the regulations, have yet to reveal what fuel allocation per lap they are allowing the new LMP1 cars at Ricard.

Organisers are using the test as the final stage of analysis of the fuel figures in the new energy-based formula, prior to setting down the allocations for the first three rounds of the 2014 WEC up to and including the Le Mans 24 Hours. (...)

So we are not even sure that all LMP1 contenders are complying with relevant fuel allocation figures. Some may be burning comparatively more fuel than others.

Exactly right...another example was the R10 v. RS Spyder battle at Laguna a couple years back, Spyder clearly quicker over a lap, but couldn't keep the R10 behind on the straights.

Well, if this figures are in FIA WEC timetable, they should be correct.

One thing is sure, they are impressive.

5 cars within less than 1 second.

What would be the use of Toyota running the #8 car in high downforce?

This is shaping up to be a banner year for the WEC. I'm glad to have tickets to Le Mans itself this year, because at this rate it's going to be BLOODY FANTASTIC.

This year's P1 race at LeMans should be absolutely fantastic; probably the best since 1999.

There's more than 200 accredited journalists at the Prologue and the WEC expects 10,000+ spectators tomorrow.

Pretty impressive, especially considering it is just a test!

Very nice comparison between the three competitors:

You can really see how the legality bump is helping Porsche to have a lower cockpit.

Oh yes, and I hope the cars of these three main manufacturers will be reliable enough at LM to give a good race from the start till the end.

  • Toyota #8 295.5 km/h

You can clearly see the difference between the low drag (#7) and high downforce (#8) aero of Toyota.
In the afternoon Toyota #7 upped the top speed considerably.

The absolute top speed can be found on http://fiawec.alkamelsystems.com/Res...%20Session.PDF

I calculated the following average for the afternoon session:
  • Audi #1 291.8 km/h
  • Audi #2 295.2 km/h
  • Toyota #7 316.9 km/h
  • Toyota #8 296.9 km/h

i certainly agree and hope it draws more factory support to P1.

Based on the name of their latest supercar i'm still hopeful for a surprise McLaren announcement someday, engine supplied by Honda of course.

and seeing the pics of those 3 cars also makes me wish the Pugs were still around. All of which (including the unraced pug) are beautiful

And according to the weather report on the WEC site, the wind, coming from south-west (or toward), didn't influence the trap speeds.

328.3 kmh for fastest Toyota and 2nd fastest Porsche in the afternoon. Top speed for the high downforce #8 Toyota comparable to the Audi, which I presume may be running the same package?

Well looking at the three cars together i can say they are never going to win a beauty contest, they look similar and all as ugly as each other, whilst the P2 cars look so much better

Timelaps show the audi supremacy in my opinion... with a so HD setting and super low top speed in a circuit like paul ricard, both R18 run in competitive laptimes, the best time of the morning session indeed and around 2 seconds faster than the other HD car (toyota #8). If tomorrow audi will test in low drag setting, I have no doubts that a top speed of over 325km/h will be achieved with a possible 1.40 too.
