At this time there were three, and all had Ferguson four-wheel drive. The one pictured was driven by Roger Clark (and ran TJ Injection if I remember correctly), Rogers brother Stan drove another, and the third was driven by Rod Chapman.

How times change eh, to most people that looks like a slightly lowered Capri on Minilites! Standard panels, windows etc. Hopped up and stripped out for bangers or hot rods.
Yet on the side it is sponsored by one of the biggest papers of the time! And underneath is the very earliest beginnings of the supercars we have today! |

The pic is from 1971 when Roger’s 4WD Capri 3000GT had a Lucas made CanAm Injection (see the trumpets) and 250+bhp.

AFAIK there were a total of four 4WD Capris, but one was very rarely used. Roger Clark’s factory Capri was sponsored by the newspaper 'Daily Express' and Stan Clark’s one by the color mag of the 'Daily Telegraph'. A semi-factory car was in the hands of Rod Chapman and used by Rod till the end of 1972, while the Clark Capris only till the end of 1971. To my knowledge the Clark Capris were always somewhat different in specs. Both had British Vita cylinder heads on their Zodiac V6 3.0 engines in the beginning, but while Roger’s had a TJ Injection the one of Stan had Weber carbs. Later Roger had a ZF gearbox, a Len Bailey made alloy cylinder heat and the earlier mentioned Lucas CanAm Injection. On this pic its six trumpets are uncovered, on other pics one can see an additional hood on the bonnet.

More recently, in the 80's Tony Proctor had a Capri with a Cosworth GA V6.

Is that one of the 800s Tony Pond used in a couple of attempts to set a 100mph average lap around the Isle of Man TT course in a production car around that time? I've got a vague memory of one of the cars involved being entered for the Brands rallycross GP It's signwritten 'Gaydon Team Spirit', which was the team run by Rover employees out of the Rover Engineering Centre at Gaydon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnKyM...eature=related Who drove it at the Rallycross GP- think it was a rallycross regular, rather than Pond? Bill Skermer drove it. It was the sister car to the one used by Tony Pond. Bill worked in the development department at Rover and was offered the car to use at an event, he choose the GP at Brands.

Thanks- I had a vague memory it was someone who worked for Rover, but couldn't think who. What was Bill's regular car at that time? Either a Pug 205 or a Fiesta rings a vague bell?

Bill drove a vey nice 205, won a BRDA round at Lydden as I recall against the likes of Milner and very good oppo.
Before that drove a lovely 8 port Metro, sponsoed b Jonspeed, lovely car. You still see Bill around a lot at meetings, nice guy and always ready for a chat. |

Bill attends most meetings as he and his wife (Kath) run the rallycross part of the BTRDA. His 205 was an ex Milner car, in which he won his class at Lydden against Haffey and Clive Richardson in their Novas. He then went on to run a Subaru Legacy in group N.

KA and bigdick1977, thanks for the background, I remember reading about the Tony pond tt 100mph attempt in motorsport news, but never made the connection before with the car that appeared at the grand prix.
