Just heard the sound of a big radial engine going overhead at about 1500 ft .
Had to look it up on radar . It was a North American T6 .Apparently used as training aircraft from WW11 on wards . Never seen one of them before , and had not heard of any in this country . |

The son of a near neighbour flies down here from time to time to waggle his wings over his parents house. He usually comes in his own 'plane but occasionally in Harvard. He treats me to a few low-level aerobatics in his own 'plane but doesn't loiter over the village too long in the Harvard, presumably because it is a bit noisy! A few weeks ago I witnessed a Harvard take-off from Le Touquet Aerodrome & do a couple of loops over the beach before flying off. It could be the same one that features in some arty photographs I've seen on sale in Le Touquet so might well be based there. Last edited by John Elwin; 18 Oct 2023 at 13:55. Reason: Missing word |

Flying low-level is said "radada" in good french pilot language… And a crash is said "to give a kiss to the planet"!

Did not know about all of the T6 aircraft in this country , or that they used them in films as a Zero . In Gary Numans story it says about all of the books about the pilots . I think I have most of them , Stanford Tuck ,John Kent , Adolf Galland , Pierre Closterman , Douglas Bader etc etc , but I never got to fly any of the aircraft . |

Sue's father was not a pilot but was in the surveillance dept and used to fit and retrieve the cameras in the planes and then develop the film when (and if) they returned, then produce the large prints to see what the enemy were up to. |

Quite a challenge for the brave pilots knowing the planes they used had a rather modest cruising speed.

Navy Wings one lives at Yeovilton and spends a lot of time flying about being noisy.
Noise is strange but I understand that it something to do with the prop speed at the tip exceeding the speed of sound such that when the listener is in a certain position the noise is very specific. |

Did once see a “Northern European research base” where bored guards had trampled a large heart in the snow with the message also trampled in which said “we love the USA” in a Cyrillic based script!! |

There's some barmy people about.
Tomorrow is the 500MRCI's seasons finale meeting @ Kirkistown & today 7 foolhardy drivers went out in a Force 9 gale & driving rain to practice for 4 hours! 4 BMW Mini's a Seat Leon and a Caterham 7 were out in their 15 minutes sessions and 1 hardy sole in a F.Ford 1600 went out alone every time. Oh and this silly pillock stood on the gantry waving the flags, aided believe it our not by the 2 man Ambulance crew. And to round off the day I got home to find we had a power cut that lasted in the small hours. The forecast is a lot better for Race Day, let's hope so. |

What a difference a day makes.
Zero wind, bit of a sea fret in the morning, bright sunshine all afternoon. 11 races and on my way home @ 4pm, not quite so barmy today! Even better news, yesterdays big bike race was abandoned @ Bishopscourt (in my back garden) because of the weather, so today was practice and the racing is now tomorrow - hooray. |

Now you're opening up a can of worms there! Easy to forget the first four years it was held at Snetterton. And that was around the time they started using the shorter circuit. Wonder why they moved it to Brands?

Could it be because John Webb, who was a massive supporter of ff1600 ran Brands and Snetterton was independent at the time.

Sounds like a good shout, Peter. I've just about stirred myself from lethargy to dig out a few shots of radial engined aircraft, mostly taken at Goodwood years ago:-
