Yeah the great thing about the BTCC in the Super Touring era, was that in the 10 years of that class, no driver or team won back to back driver titles, Menu even being the only driver to win to championships in the ST reign, as opposed to the 5 Litre series when in the last 5 championships have been won by 1 team and only 2 drivers.

Read on the www.ozspeed.net site that Motorsport Developments has announced that their 2 Carina's will be sponsored by Repsol Australia in the Super Touring Championship contested over 6 rounds in 2003. What is even more fascinating is that Repsol Australia are also involved with Mal Rea's Toyota Supra which is being run in this years Bathurst 24 Hour. Great news all round

Is this a new Toyota Supra? Or could it be the one last driven by Bryan Thompson in 2000, prior to that by Jamie Cartwright and earlier John Bourke?

Good to see a new sponser in Australian motorsport. I guess this means the Carina's will finally get a new coat of paint.

I can't believe I'm saying this , but the Carinas need more than a new coat of paint! I think the whole car, including engine, has to be rebuilt. Like the Peter Hills Mondeos/Phoenix Motorsport Camry a few years ago! I can't wait to see what colours the cars are going to be racing under.

AussieV8 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
As I have said in a previous comment the locals just didn't give the small cars a chance. If the powers to be got together back in the 90's we could have had the two running side by side. The a majority of the V8 crowds just know one thing in motorsport and thats if it hasn't got RWD and a F/H badge and a V8 they don't want to know. Atleast with the PROCAR circus you get a variety of motorsport and still have the V8 F/H rivarly in the utes. I plan to go to atleast one ST event this year just to support motorsport and see the different cars. As a avid Lansvale supporter I will still follow the V8's but maybe not as much as I used to. My mates and I are trying to put together a car for the APCC or GTP but its a slow process and $$$ is still a problem....

Would i be right in assuming the make of car being looked into would start with an M

On Mal Rea, what happened to the two Toyota Corolla's he was building/had built in 1996/97, Andrej Pavicivic was rumoured to have one of the drives. I think i recall a pic of one in AA, they were pretty much just the Corolla shell with the Carina internals installed.

Sorry to get further off track, but what is Andrej Pavicivic up to this year.
With Mal Rea's new sponsorship deal, I suppose the Carina is looking good for this years championship, some competition for Alan Gurr

Like 'The Voice' said on here the other week, the Carina, with Wayne Wakefield driving, and with some decent tyres and Wayne's mechanic doing the fiddling, the car was capable of running in the top of the 1998 Bathurst 1000. With Mal doing everything,... well, let's hope he can get the first hurdle of getting to the track out of the way, that is getting to the track on time. I suppose in the 24hr there is plenty of time to catch up

On things 24hr, there seems to be a lot of punters expecting just to walk up and get a start at Bathurst. PROBLEM: there will only be 55 spots on the grid, normal Procar competitors get priority, internationals also get a look in, but Joe punter is somewhat down the order, and this year it won't be a case of 'run what you brung'.. Some people might be in for a rude shock....

Then there will certainly be a huge amount of dissapointed Australian competitors. Assuming a fair chunk of Procar Champ Series competitors enter, then the international competitors, how much room will there be for the others?

DRT - Andrej Pavicivic, last i heard he raced in the Italian F3000 Championship a few years back.

It was originally, but they revised that down for whatever reason...maybe it was 83 upon the assumption that the track was going to be upgraded or something?

The original plan was to extend the pitlane up Mountain Straight. 55 cars is probably enough, especially if the reliability of the cars is similiar to last year, where there weren't a whole heap of retirements (though alot of problems, expected though in a 24hr race).

I think around 20-25 cars finished the race, but this wasn't Le mans so a lot of the teams didn't have the spares other teams would of had

At Le Mans though remember you are out if you can't make it back to the pits under your own steam, the Scheider/Webber/Ludwig Mercedes from Le Mans 1998 for example.

Under the Le Mans rules Cirtek wouldn't have been able to repair the car after Grice's accident and send it back out (to crash again 20 seconds later). 20-25 cars finishing from 36 starting was a fantastic effort.

Yeah huge reliability was most of the field is was great, however what was surprising was for most of the field to finish the race and one of the best prepared teams, PHR done 2 engines 8 Hours.
Also the reliability of the Super Tourers was pretty swell aswell, The Castrol BMW qualified 10th and ran for 20 hours.

Yeah, included the engine change. I didnt think the BMW would get that far, based on the trouble this car had with 1000km. I wonder if the Miles Cleland BMW might make it to a few Super Touring races this year. Not a geniune front runner, but would be great to have them in the field

He never turned up at any of the ASTC rounds during 1997,98 or 99 when they had the Bathurst 1000 at the end of the year, i don't know if they'd bother now.

kmchow - Le Mans is held in mid-June, i was just referring to their rulebook for repairing cars. The Castrol BMW 318i Super Tourer ran in last years Bathurst 24 Hours (There were 2 of them). They both qualified in the top half of the field, and ran in the top 10 for a couple of hours. Neither finished though. The other ST BMW was the car that T-Boned the Monaro during the night
