I remember when they introduced ten points for the win it was for those reasons.
How would it have panned out? It would be the same. I remember when they introduced ten points for the win it was for those reasons. How would it have panned out? It would be the same. |

Funny how even with the 9-6-4-... system, the double points system (18-12-8- then) would not really change much.
Rosberg 1st and Hamilton 3rd would still give Rosberg the title in the 9-6-4 system. With the current point system, Rosberg wins if he: * is 1st with Hamilton not second * is 2nd with Hamilton lower than 5th * is 3rd with Hamilton outside the top 6 * is 4th and Hamilton lower than 8th * is 5th and Hamilton is outside top 9 With the 9-6-4 system, the first 2 rules are still the same. Being 3rd or less will not do for Rosberg. Not a HUGE difference in scoring after 18 races after all. |

It is the double points that is comedy.

It wouldn't be the same. Teams wouldn't accrue as much income from the results of only six placings and teams further down the grid would have to take particular care that budget wasn't dependent on scoring points.

The difference being that the Ferrari was not that much better then the main opposition, Maserati, but with Ascari at the wheel it was enough, today the differential is far too much toward the car and not enough toward the driver. I believe that the last few seasons have shown that no matter how good the driver, it is the car that counts most. Look at Moss in 1961 winning the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of the far faster Ferraris,(they finished 2nd, 3rd, & 4th.) the driver making up for lack of performance. Could not happen today. Not complaining, merely commenting. Good to disagree with you Greem. Cheers, Bauble. |

You used to be able to get a stellar driver in an average car give an average driver in a stellar car a decent fight sometimes.
That just isn't possible in the current environment. |

Hamilton is a self confessed Senna disciple.
Would he be considering a repeat of the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix............... |

Respect to Nico for his attitude. Respect to Lewis as world champion!

Right result. Lewis has now matured and genuinely become a 'great' and may now get even better since hopefully all his 'head' stuff has been banished to the back of his brain. 11 - 5 really ought to be a no contest - only the points system contradicts that, and it was ever thus, but can we at least now dispense with this double points nonsense which was righty denigrated from the outset. Kudos to Nico for making a go of it all season and who would have guessed his qualifying record against LH would have been so impressive. More kudos too for telling his team that he intended to take the flag rather than park it.

Totally agree with all that, John! On the point of qualifying, a casual remark to BBC by Toto (I think) after Q on Saturday suggested Lewis had possibly concentrated more on race set up rather than a one lap one. Wonder if that was the case for some of the others as well?
Whatever, I enjoyed watching the two drivers all season. Well done both! |

Surely 'we concentrated on race set up' is #1 in the Book of Excuses?
It was gratifying to see that despite all the efforts of trash media and gossip merchants there remains a true bond of respect between Lewis and Nico. They can both look back on a memorable fight where no quarter was given. |

this, and what garc said too. they're both class acts.
i think rosberg is made to look unnecessarily bad by this result as well. it's not that he's not very good, it's that hamilton really is THAT good. |

There probably was a degree of animosity towards the end of the season.
Then once the matter was decided any animosity became futile and the pressure just washed away and an appreciation of how well they both done took its place. That's my reading of it anyway. |

Rosberg's demeanour reminded me very much of that of Massa at Interlagos in '08. Grace and magnanimity personified.
I reckon Nico will win a lot of new fans from this - or at the very least, a lot of those who professed to hate him (for whatever reason) this year will see the man underneath the mask and recognise that it's not the same as the PR-driven competitor that's been on show this year. It's been a great fight. One which I hope we'll still be talking about in 20 odd years, like we do some of the other greats. |
