I'm a bit puzzled by the ease with which "Motor Racing Medics" and other organisations can offer to do the MSA medical. Only two or three years ago, the Blue Book was changed from referring to 'a doctor' to saying that the medical would be "by their General Practitioner (GP)". This form is used several times in Section C (a) 26. "Their GP" means the doctor in general practice with whom the applicant is registered under the NHS.
We must presume that this was changed so that the medical was performed by a doctor with in depth knowledge of the applicant's medical history, possibly to prevent fraud. So why is a medical from a doctor who has never seen the applicant before the "London Motorsports Race Car Live" show acceptable? John |

One reason is that a lot of GPs wont do private medicals of this sort, mine wouldn't for a few years when the new contracts came in as they were too busy sorting the mess out.

He's charging £65 + VAT.
I thought that was rather expensive, after hearing that my friend's GP does his for just £25 because he's over 45 and goes there once a year. However, I heard their usual charge is £90. I think it's rather unreasonable for the actual work involved. Quote:
If he says no, then I'll be a bit stuck. I'll have to buy an old banger for a couple of grand and try and muddle along with my non-existent engineering skills and complete and utter lack of tools. Failing that, I was hoping to make a few "friends" in the club racing world and see if anyone will let me drive their car for the odd race, providing they don't try and make too much (or even any) profit out of me |

My GP wanted a lot - can't remember now, £175 / £200, something like that. Paid £50 in the end.

Passed my medical no problem
Full peripheral vision and my amblyopia isn't a problem - 6/18 both uncorrected and corrected, left eye 6/12 uncorrected and 6/5 corrected (just about!!!), both eyes open easily 6/5. BP was good (130/80) and I don't have any illnesses. May go for the test on December 18th at Brands. A bit miffed I don't get any practice without paying another £200, but I've driven the cars before, I have a vague idea of how they handle having driven them for 15 minutes last year, so fingers crossed, I'll be going racing in 2009... |

Cheers guys...Without your support, I probably wouldn't have done the medical, nor would I be readying myself for the ARDS test...Really appreciate the advice I've been given The easy bit is out of the way now, so congratulate me when I've got through the hard bit

Well done PT, I'm delighted for you.
So you're hoping to drive a club F3? Piece of cake! |

Not club, but classic.
Test is booked for Dec 18th at Brands, no tuition purchased...Says on the notes that helmets are available for hire, so I will try and buy my own before so I don't have to spend money unnecessarily. |

The helmet I wanted has already gone up by £50 as I discovered they're made in the USA and no doubt the exchange rate has increased the price!

I had my medical today and my left eye is 6/9 and the right eye 6/6 uncorrected so I'm pretty pleased with that as I thought my eyesight had deteriorated, but obviously it hasn't apart from needing reading glasses.
