Nothing wrong with the link unless you're touchy about seeing Yank tanks wrecked.......effective bit of kit but you'd have to be processing a lot of cars to get it to pay for itself.

When I owned a full-blown breakers yard if we had enough time we might rip the non-saleable engines out with the Hi-Ab before the cars were crushed, but at the then current prices for whole cars as scrap versus the same car with the engine and box ripped out and the two scrap streams sold seperately, it was marginal whether it was worth the time and effort. The differential may be greater at current prices, of course, and with more aluminium in the modern engines they are likely to have a higher value...

Now I just specialise in Alfas my turnover of cars is much lower, of course, and I do tend to spanner all the engines/boxes out before scrapping them...

Of course we didn't need to use T-cut afterwards, Gordon ;-)

I wonder if they can pull the engine without crushing the block castings or rendering them scrap as opposed to recyclable.

T-cut the average alfa and you'll be staring at thin air!

Shame as I've been away for a few days and Daniel is driving down from York on Monday, so we can't go until Tuesday. Never mind, we'll tell you all about it, have a great trip.

Hope Peter's "head doesn't explode" having to read this again

I just watched your video from Donnington, you can see me sometimes ahead in the distance

I think that makes it 4-1 to me in the Big Boys Challenge

Don't worry - I'll wait for you if you get your diff sorted

I had a locked (welded) diff in my A35 and I think Joss has a welded diff in his Lotus Sunbeam. I used to chuck the rear end of my A35 round corners, but I was historic Dunlops with much less grip than you have on your Toyos.

4 times I had that heavy old gearbox out but finally got the clutch operating, just 24thou of shims on the preload made the difference between it release or not. In some ways I am glad as I also noticed during one of the strip downs the the pilot bearing had fallen apart so changed that as well that may have wrecked the Tilton clutch.

I like a bit of rocket science now and then, 25 thou, thats less than 1/32"

which is probably tighter than the big end clearance!

Well sorted Iain. The route from Porto to Santander is as we discussed yesterday- have checked Michelin's route planner on t'internet.

Time to explain the 'bicycle repair man' thing? At Monza we were going for a bike ride round circuit but before got that far Iain managed to destroy the rear deraiileur on his by kicking it while under full power attempting to get it to change gear. The chain jammed and rest was predictable..... Even the hanger (mount) behind drop out was bent. So between helping to fettle or bail out the 156 Sharknose I stripped the whole derailleur down, straightened everything as much as possible and put it back together. After a few tweaks on adjustment screws a complete range of gears were available to the rider- apparantly the first time for many moons.

Thinking of Gordon's Superman outfit, we then spent many wasted minutes trying to remember where 'Bicycle Repair Man' featured on TV. Our guess was the Goodies?

So does that mean you are good to go this weekend @ Mallory then?

Shame I won't be racing as it may have been a chance for you to even the score a bit. Did I mention that it's 4-1

So are you saying.., that the rear derailleur should not be kicked when it refuses to do the decent thing?

I have just received a text from Iain on the ferry. He is very excited at his progress with learning French and he tells me that he has been speaking French to the crew. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the crew are Spanish and he is, in fact, on his way to Spain (before driving down to Portugal).

Yep. According to my late mother "If you speak slowly enough and clear enough, any damn fool foreigner can understand you!!!"

Didn't always work though
