Well,in our age of Elf'n'Safety, where the powers that be think we should all be cotton wool wrapped as soon as we get out of bed, slightest little knock and they all go rushing for help.
Here's to next year, things will hopefully be sooooo much better.

I'm having a cracking time with my engine installation, I have just cracked a race inlet manifold screwing in a blanking plug and worse still its all installed then I have done the same bloody thing on a Mocal remote filter head so thats scrap as well. I thought I might get away with Araldite on the inlet manifold as thats expensive and a real lot of work to replace or repair but just pressurised the water system and its sodding leaking, I could cry. Insidently I am not heavy handed but on both oi these I used teflon tape and I think that may pack the fitting out too much.

You know Al if I were I would push on with any other dodgy tasks that you feel may go wrong and get all the bad luck that may be in line for your future out of the way in 2009. Hopefully 2010 will then be clear and trouble free.

Sorry, no science behind that but you never know - it might work.

"always look on the bright side of life". I have learnt that when things go wrong in the workshop its a good sign. Whats meant to be and i always tell my lot that if you are in doubt about anything you must address it as sure as eggs is eggs the problem will reappear and kick you in the nuts .Just when you are leaving the assemble area

Funny how a story like Al's brings back memories. When i was building my first race car "that terrible modsports GT6".I was working as a manager of a motor factors "crap job " but they did support my racing ,anyway i would leave work then go to my lock up and work on the race car. There was not electric "was a long time ago" so i had a generator in the garage next door .Then one night after everything had gone wrong i was pretty fed up called it a day and went next door after locking up to switch generator off. Unknown to me the machine had spun round and in the dark i was fumbling for the switch and then put my fingers in the flywheel.I had to drive to hospital to have them stitched up then went home to my caravan by now early hours of the morning and promptly dropped my dinner on the floor. At this point i nearly pulled the plug on my failed racing carer and had a good old cry.

Yeah probably right at least as far as the Araldite bodge because that would no doubt have bit me back one day. Ironically the replacement Mocal remote filter head has just this minute arrived so i would have been able to fire her up tomorrow. I have an Edelbrock Scorpion 2 manifold which is a very good period piece and port matched to the heads so i will fit that till I get the Weilland repaired just hope the gaskets come away clean as I wont get any at the moment, I was holding back the Scorpion because its a rare piece and was original fitment on the Penske IROC racecar but I will borrow it for now.

Its an ill wind. I have ran this car off and on for years and it appears the remote filter head has always been flowing the oil the wrong way! It should go through the outside of the filiter then up through the centre, it hasnt its been going to other way because it was an incorrect design. I would like to hold my hands up and blame myself but this was orginally built by someone else I commissioned and was done wrong from day one. may explain a few things!

Makes you wonder doesn't it? My front discs were fitted back to front despite being marked lh & rh, unless this is some obscure tweak I haven't heard of.

Al that's one of the most asked question's i get from people about the remote oil filter housings. When i tell them which way to plumb the fittings they always question my answer. "how dare they".I'm not going to mention his name but a very accomplished engineer and race car builder did just that and plumed the pipes the wrong way then destroyed his engine.

Yes, seems to happen more often than it should! John Wilcox went through it all several times when I was discussing the plumbing for my dry sump setup- he doesn't like to see his BDs destroyed before they have run! Not an immediate disaster if filter will allow flow either way, but if there is a non return valve He related an instance where the pressure gauge sender was the 'wrong' side as well so showed pressure even though no oil was getting to engine. Ouch!

Colin, the front discs on my Escort were fitted the wrong sides of the car as well by someone who should have known better, plus the supplier, when a pair ordered, provided a 24 vane left and 48 vane right. When queried the answer was 'AP say they are interchangeable' Needless to say I went to another supplier for replacement!

Might this be something to do with improved brake induced turn-in when racing in ovals?

I use a filter with an anti drain back valve as I also plumb in a Accusump to the filterhead, I would imagine when the accusump opened it may well have been firing the oil back to the pump instead of where needed at the bearings! Anyhow just changed the inlet manifold over and fitted the new filter head and she is all ready for lift off tomorrow morning but I better delay the fire up till midday as I recon there will be a few sore heads in the neighbourhood tomorrow and my name is already mud around here.
