I think a Gulf/Prodrive Lola Aston will show up at more than just Le Mans, think silverstone and maybe spa. |

Back in 1950, Louis Rosier drove a Talbot with his son (only two drivers in those days) although by all accounts Rosier Junior did very little driving. Michael Cotton's book on LM tells us that the car spent 41 minutes having a rocker shaft replaced at 5am and that Junior drove for two laps while father ate a bunch of bananas! The car set the fastest lap - the first at over 100mph |

Andy Priaulx said today at ASI that his racing schedule for 2010 in the M3 GT2 includes Le Mans. So at least one entry has been submitted from BMW/Schnitzer, let's see if it's accepted by the ACO.
Also, I read a few times around here that the M3 GT2 is not yet officially homologated by the ACO. Is that true? |

It's just something over which you'll have to humour this old boy - I can't resist the jibes, I'm afraid, but the story goes back several years in these pages and I accept that my thinking is probably out of line with that of most here. Probably not a great idea to open up old wounds.....

Personally I can wait too. Nothing against the car, it's just that it's not a GT2 Sportscar in the same mould that a 997/430/Spyker/Vantage is. Would anyone really expect to see a Renault Laguna GT2, or a Ford Mondeo GT2? No, I thought not.
Yes, I know the M3 is a fast car and probably as good as a true Sportscar, but.... I'd rather see it in mixed series like Britcar or VLN, in fact one of the previous incarnations of the M3 GTR (or whatever it's called) did appear in the Britcar 24hrs in 2008, and very nice it looked too. |

I was trying to think back to the 80's when I was sure there were less exotic machiney in the GT class...

On the BMW topic the real regret reflects some of the lack of openness in GT2 - I'd much rather see a Z4 GT2 than the M3, in the same way I'd like to see a Porsche Cayman GT2 alongside the 911.
That said, the current M3 looks an awful lot more like a sportscar than previous boxy iterations. Would I like to see it? Probably yes if it's a good Schnitzer or similar entry rather than a back end Ferrari or Porsche, probably no if it's keeping a Spyker or a Vantage out. |

I'm with Aysedasi and Aston Geoff on this one, but have to admit that history is not on our side. For example, 1949 saw a four-door Renault 4CV entered (and no, I wasn't there, despite my advancing years) They were back the following year and three finished in 24th, 25th and 27th places) In 1951 a Lancia Aurelia was entered - surely very much in the spirit of today's BMW - and finished 12th, then did even better in 52. There are countless other examples.
BMW themselves brought the 2800 CS to Le Mans in 72 to race against the Capri - again a similar pattern. Whilst I'd rather not see the BMW at LM, it's, sadly, preferable to watching a "real" GT called the JLOC Lamborghini |

I think it is all a matter of what you think is a sports saloon and what is a sportscar, BMW do have cars which can be classed as Sports cars and I would prefer to see them racing in this class, the M3 has other types of racing where it would be more suitable.
