this week I've been mostly restoring and rebuilding a 1500GT engine from an Albatross Aluminium hulled mid 1960's speedboat . . . no Rochdale progress, cage is being made but I haven't heard a peep for a few weeks

Bet that flies - in period they were fitted with the 997cc Anglia engine. I was lucky enough to know a young lady in the early 60s whose family owned an Albatross, a little 2 seater (or 3 little uns) speedboat, up on Windermere and it was a joy to drive.

Hi Guys, apologies for butting in and further disrupting your thread, but the mention of 'Albatross' got me going. I was bought up by boat and sailing mad parents on the Norfolk Broads and used to watch in awe the occasional Albatross roar by! If I remember rightly they were built here in Norfolk, and the ultimate version had a Coventry Climax fitted- truly the Lotus of the seas in their day! Now very sought after in the classic boat world, and quite rightly so.

Thanks, Mike

I think the Albatross was around from the mid to late 50s as the one I had a few outings in was in 1960/1961. I think the early ones were 1220cc Climax powered but changed to the Ford 997cc unit in the late 50s - probably on cost grounds.

Here you go

http://albatrossregister.com/1257.html

the engine is a 1500 GT with aquaplane inlet and SU's, and a great stainless steel water jetted exhaust manifold (that weighs a ton!) the water jet is sea water via a cooling coil in the cast aluminium sump . . .simple, but clever.

so in GT form was probably more powerful than a standard 1220 climax, and a fraction of the price, I've also done in the not too distant past a near identical engine for a Delta, also an aluminium hulled floatey number.

the hardest part has been dismantling all the unique castings without damaging them, despite severe external corrosion we seem to have an excellent set of parts . . .and a nice warmed up GT engine to lash it to.

this is the first interesting thing on here for weeks!!! historis speedboat racing anyone ?

Historic Boat racing at Lake Como osunds the nuts - a load cheaper than a weekend at Spa and some serious entertainment in the evening.
I appreciate the professional drivers around these parts would not find it any interest but I reckon its a wife friendly way of getting some petrol fumes!!

Thanks Zef for posting the link to the Albatross Register (I even found a 'project' for sale on the 'net for £150!)- just to get the thread back onto cars and stuff I like their VW Split-Screen delivery truck!

Please keep the Rochdale updates coming when you have time to progress- as owner of the blue Gilbern GT which has been pottering around last couple of seasons it is interesting to read about other specialist cars. Sounds like the Gilbern has a couple of advantages- It was homologated and spaceframe chassis makes fitting cage easier, but to counter that it is hardly aerodynamic and not light either!

Regards, Mike

If I could find an ALbatross and avoid divorce I'd get one to add to the project list!

thanks Mike, we saw the car at Spa, lovely, and nice to see theres safety in numbers for those of us who aren't desperate to win at any cost, just happy to go and enjoy our spare time with a loved one . . .warts and all!

TonyBrooks should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I have really enjoyed reading this thread. I drove an Olympic for the first time on Wednesday and was very pleasantly surprised. I had originally arranged with the owner to drive his Tornado Talisman as I have been looking for one of these for some while (I have just sold a Tornado Typhoon) but before commiting myself thjought it sensible to try one out to see if I liked the experience etc. - I did! Zef - I live about 2 miles from Simon and his TT so I have a feeling that at some stage I might be calling on you for either engine/gearbox advice or a look at your Olympic (with cage). So now I just have to find a TT or an Olympic - the intention is to use it for Road rallying with the HRCR. Incidentally if you look on the H&H web site you will see several Olympics and their derivatives - Malcolm McKay cars I have been led to believe, which are coming up for sale in June.
