Flag radios were all analogue last year too. They *really* suffered from the rain - both the yellow and blue flag radio channels were "open circuit" for large parts of Friday and Saturday.

Fingers crossed for dry weather this year!

I understand the plan was to go digital...but who knows.

The first meeting at Silverstone is tomorrow so we'll find out or update as the season goes on, a lot can happen between now and the end of June!

Hey guys. Just thought I would share something sent to me by a friend. I can't do this, but some of you might be able to.

For those not actually marshalling the Grand Prix, Silverstone are still requesting people to steward. They obviously watched the Olympics and had a sudden brainwave as to what to call them:

Most original name ever

naff that, work all weekend dealing with crowds for no pay! is that a cheeky way to save on staffing costs mirroring olympics and have these replaced the spectator marshals

Aren't the stewards appointed by the FIA?

I'm told these aren't spectator marshals who will be organised as usual.

I think it's more along the olympics idea of having volunteers to do a lot of the crowd direction, staff the enquiry points and do general ticket checking, so that the G4S security can be less in your face with the public.

Lol, maybe I should have been clearer (or the Silverstone website should have been quoted directly).

Quote:
We are looking for volunteers to fulfil various roles such as assisting with stewarding and providing information to customers. Volunteers will be working directly with members of Silverstone Circuits. Responsibilities may include welcoming members of the public to the venue, checking tickets, giving directions, dealing with customer queries and assisting with disability transportation around the site.
So Stewarding the speccy's, not the cars.

The rightful place for any Steward is waiting on the marshals and Race Makers with food and beverages.

Or maybe G4S can't manage to train enough staff to man something bigger than a village fete!

Benj should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Well, at first I was unsuccessful in my application, but then yesterday there was a letter on the doormat when I got home to tell me that I have now been invited to come along as a flag marshal...

So, as this is my first time at the Grand Prix as a marshal, what am I to expect, and how will it compareto a 'normal' event?

It will be wet and there will be lots and lots of hanging around and then a very loud noise and some very fast cars will go go whizzing past you and you'll realise why you volunteered.
