What's interesting is that the phone number given appears to have a US (Washington) dialling code. 'Woodner Racing' was probably American race/rally driver Jon Woodner's outfit- he was Washington-based apparently. He died in a plane crash in the spring of '88, so possibly the team were selling off their cars? http://www.rallyracingnews.com/scca/rally/jwoodner.html He certainly rallied a Prodrive M3 in 1987, using it on some European events- the car carrying his distinctive US registration plate 'FAST-1', which IIRC had been seen on earlier rally outings in Europe- he did the RAC at least once in a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus in the early 80's http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y10...7MontBlanc.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y10...odnerVar87.jpg Interesting to see that he might have had a race M3 as well though... |

Looking at a pic in Autosport's report of Round 2 at Oulton it appears to be black with pink spots, but in their Thruxton report a month later, it's decorated with a pattern of diamonds (yellow I think?) The Thruxton pic actually shows it going backwards into the barriers, just before impact.... I think when it finally returned to action at Silverstone for the TT after a rebuild from the Thruxton shunt, it might have been plain black? |

Tony Crudgington was also apparently supposed to be racing at both Spa and Snetterton and intended to commute by plane with Hodgetts but 'the arrangements went awry somewhere and Tony had to remain at Snetterton throughout the weekend'. I'm guessing his Spa drive fell through, as he's not mentioned in the Spa report in the same issue. Alistair Davidson was supposed to be driving the Crudgington Corolla in Tony's absence. According to MN, after qualifying at Spa, Hodgetts:
Sadly, it was all in vain, the M3 only lasting 4 laps with bodywork damage after the clash with Mike Smith, and the Corolla at Spa retired 15 minutes from the flag.... MN's take on the Smith/Hodgetts incident at the start- 'A little back there was something of a rumpus. Depending on who you spoke to, either Hodgetts took aim and drove straight into the Mobil M3 of Smith, or Smith was hit from behind by assailants unknown and hit Hodgetts. Whatever, Hodgetts creamed the nose of the red M3 into the pit straight barriers and Smith suffered a punctured right rear and spun going rond Riches' and on Smith's altercation with team-mate Sytner over fastest lap: 'There was a fly in the ointment though in the shape of teammate Smith. Following his pitstop, Smith decided that slicks were the things to be running as he could see the track drying out. These were fitted as per his request and the right choice for him it proved to be as he set out again and recorded fastest class lap. Remember of course that this achievement carries the reward of one point. Remember also that the points situation between Sytner, Rouse and Dowsett is very tight at the top and you have a recipe for Frank's displeasure. That is understating the case... By the same token, Smith, understandably felt that it was not his job, but that of the team manager to decide whether he should have had his request for slicks met. The option was there to refuse, and Frank could have always come in for slicks too, given his lead over Hall. Will Hoy, by contrast was being a good boy and holding station directly behind Frank... I apologise for my laziness, I am keen to help out and plug in any gaps. I don't have much time to go through the whole thread, but could anyone point out which race results that need completing or filling in?
I got 1986-1990 Motoring News newspapers and I got it with me now. Thank you. |

Had a look at the 1988 season and this is what's missing, round by round:
R01 1988.03.27 Silverstone: qualifying and fastest lap times missing except for fastest in the classes. R02 1988.04.01 Oulton Park: same as for R01 R03 1988.05.02 Thruxton: fastest lap times missing R04 1988.05.15 Donington Park: same as for R01 R05 1988.05.30 Thruxton: fastest lap times missing. For some reason I have doubts about Mike O'Brien's qualifying time of 1:23.45, but don't remember what its about. R06 1988.06.05 Silverstone: Bob Sands, Lionel Wiffen, Andrew Jeffrey and Kevin Eaton all practiced, but did they run in qualifying? No times for these four available. The rest fairly complete. R07 1988.07.10 Silverstone: fairly complete, but as for most rounds, elapsed times beyond drivers on the lead lap missing. R08 1988.07.24 Brands Hatch: fairly complete R09 1988.07.31 Snetterton: fairly complete. Mike O'Brien disqualified for tangling with Laurence Bristow, but where did O'Brien finish on the road compared to other drivers completing 19 laps? Bristow (already DNFed) Mahony Sytner Hoy Hales Bell Hall Dowsett Jeffrey R10 1988.08.21 Brands Hatch: fairly complete R11 1988.08.29 Birmingham: qualifying times missing for the lower half of the grid and non-qualifyers. R12 1988.09.18 Donington Park: qualifying and fastest lap times missing completely R13 1988.10.02 Silverstone: fairly complete That's on the request list by my notes. Jesper |

Some good quotes from various drivers and team owners about the race cancellation though- Funnily enough there's no direct quote from Tom Walkinshaw.... The MN report confirms that Ratzenberger took over the drive in Minshaw's M3 after Win Percy withdrew |

But I am still confident I can find the times and positions for the 1988 Birmingham Superprix. I got to dig deep somewhere.

I have contacted the archivist at the BRSCC regarding about the 1988 Birmingham Superprix. Hope I will hear from him this week.

Jon was died in a private plane crash that spring so none of the events with Prodrive-prepared cars were contested. While the lawyers sorted out his professional estate I was tasked with closing down and disposing of the racing operation. The '88 arrangement with Prodrive called for the delivery of his car (either rally or race) at the end of the season. While the negotiations with Prodrive were conducted for the refund of the funds advanced for that season's events, I looked at the likelihood of disposing of the car via the Autosport ad. We had some tire-kickers from the ad, Prodrive in the end agreed to refund any funds that had been put toward the car, in addition to the other monies deposited. So there was never a specific chassis from the Prodrive fleet associated advertised car. Oh and the telephone was my office line. I still have a few of my JWR business cards lying around with that number. I had completely forgotten it until I saw this posting. |

Paul- thanks for filling in the background to the Jon Woodner M3 story.
I'd heard of Jon, and probably seen him in action on the RAC Rally with the Sunbeam Lotus, but didn't really know much about him. Appearances by American rally drivers in Europe have always been fairly unusual- the only ones I can think of during that period are JW (Sunbeam Lotus, M3 and I think I've seen mention of him having a Peugeot 205T16) and John Buffum (TR8 and Audi Quattro). I hadn't realised that he'd been planning to run an M3 in some European races as well as rallies though |

Thanks Jason- I think it might be the Andrew Jeffrey and James Shead Golfs that may have had rally origins- possibly from David Sutton according to what Autosport and MN reported at the time?. As you say, the car your Dad ran for James Kaye was never a rally car

All the bobins about a new shell on the M3 is rubbish aswell it was repaired !
The schnitzer bit was the Engine that we got from a non Prodrive source as the competition were never going to give us the best were they ??? We got hold of a couple of used sets of works Yokohamas (unnamed source ) which BMW went scitz about as they were way quicker than the works Pirrellis and the stock dunlops we used . neadless to say the source dried up pretty quik . Couldn't have a privateer beating the works cars ??? again after Thruxton Well Done Roland (rip) |

Good info about the engine and tyres - as we thought Prodrive wouldn't help out as that car with Roland driving it with the right bits was more than a match for 'Fearless' Frank and the DJ. I bet Dave Richards and Bee-em loved that!!! |

Good to have the car id of a few of the 1988 cars straightend. I had the two Golfs of Andrew Jeffrey and James Shead as converted rally cars per Autosport for all these years.
During these saloon car threads I have wondered that some teams seems to have gone through quite a lot of cars while other operations has made due with very few. Jesper |

Your ok, I think Mr Minshaw miunderstood you. Your original posts were clear enough to me, it's understood that the 2 white and blue Golf's were ex rally cars, the Minshaw car was circuit born only. |

The Autosport season review article describes the Jeffery (Specialist Cars Aberdeen) and Shead (John Maguire Racing) Golfs as 'ex-Sutton Motorsport Volkswagens, not ideal for circuit racing, but for both men it was an inexpensive way into the Group A arena'
Sutton had run a 'VW Motorsport Junior Team' on UK events in 1986 or 87- 4 Golfs, representing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland- the cars were originally registered C793/794/795/796CYX, and drivers were Simon Davison, Callum Guy, Steve Davies and Robin Phillips. Could the two BTCC cars might have started life as one of these four cars? Incidentally, a Sutton/VW Junior Team Golf was one of the rally cars tested by Ayrton Senna for Cars & Car Conversions magazine in 1986 a few pics- the Shead and Jeffery cars raced in the same white/blue colours seen in the first pic: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3051/...8735a8cae2.jpg http://www.vwmotorsport.info/vwpics/...anx%20jpeg.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...s/100_1458.jpg http://www.racecar-engineering.com/i...5ef8efb7e3.jpg Last edited by KA; 21 May 2010 at 22:48. |

Like I've done from the other years, I'll recap the entry lists. I think we've got the bulk of this one, there aren't too many gaps in race numbers, entrants/sponsors etc. Again I'll include the Donington co-drivers where relevant

A bit of a question mark over the CHMS Corollas. I've got the following pics to confirm race numbers and sponsors:

Found the answer from this:
the BBC coverage of the Donington 1-hour race (Round 4). The screencap pic I mentioned of the red Corolla was clearly taken from this, so it's definitely the Hales/Watts car at this race. So, as far as I can tell, CHMS started the season with a red car with race number 60 for Richard Belcher (seen on the video at 0:28, tangling with Kevin Eaton's MIL car at Silverstone) Hales then took over for Oulton and shared with Patrick Watts at Donington, where the car was rolled after a clash with Mike Newman- seen on the video at around 3:50) By round 5, where the car is again shunted (by Nick May's Maserati on lap 1) Hales is running as no.61. Did the colour change from from red to green come after the Donington roll, or the Silverstone shunt?- or is the green car seen later in the season a different CHMS Corolla? |
