with a turbo you dont want any restriction in the exhaust at all, on an e30 the exhaust has to pass under the rear x member, but the 3 inch bore prohibits it doing that, so it has to come out the side, but that still doesn't leave room enough room for a decent sized silencer, so splitting it with the exhaust exiting the car each side just ahead of the rear wheels effectively it becomes quieter, half the noise each side, but most important off all, you can get flames both sides of the car at once!

No it is 3 inches the entire run. I had a pair of exhauses running under the axle before but I suspected under heavy braking the exhausts were actually picking up the axle, also I have made some modifications and it is now just too tight for a dual system past the gearbox crossmember, as it is the thing is rattling around underneath but I am going to try and ignore that :-)

So, as it seems that everyone with Turbo cars is talking, let me just announce that Gorgeous George Newton has twiddled the spanners, and the Fatty Farr Fiesta is now finally ready to do battle! Ta Ra! at last! except that the MSA has decreed I have to buy a new 6-point harness before the start of the season. Baa Humbug!
So watch out Graham, as I come past you on the main straight at Silverstone, totally out of control, trying to work out what this turbo lag expression means !!! Screaming "How do I switch all this power off ?" |

Al if were talking about the car with the 500bhp motor then i would of thought a single 3 inch front front to rear would be too small, working on the basis that my old non turbo 208bhp 8v needed a 2.5 system to make best power

Yes I tought it may be the case and it probably has a bit more than 500 as it is a proper unit probably a bit too much for the chassis really if the truth be known, in the same way as a restriction in an electrical or plumbing circuit still allows a full flow (I believe), if after the restriction past the cross member I opened back out to a twin 3 inch system would that help do you think. I am hoping to get a bit more of a wider torque band which is why I have also fitted a 800cfm Holly spreadbore carb (small primaries dustbin lid secondaries) as it was a bit power manic and revvy before although it will pull 7800rpm
I should be working FlatOut but it is a bit quite here this week for some reason anyhow I am awaiting the big printer to finish a poster, thats my excuse anyhow |

What class would that be in Grahame, would it be 'A' by virtue of the added Turbo?

my car, class b, adding a turbo doesn't automatically bump a car up a class, so you too Al could fit a turbo without ending up in class A, as long as you dont have more than 1 fuel injecter per cylinder, 4WD, a transaxle or a sequential gearbox
class A unlimited engine cc, engine swaps etc, as long as it remains front engined class B over 2000cc over 1600 forced induction class c upto 2000cc multi valve upto 1600 forced induction class d upto 2000 2 valve 1600 multi valve class e upto 1600 2 valve |

Ah right I see so effectively Class B could be considered Class A for any normal non specials and 2WD's.
Blimey add a turbo no thanks, did'nt Andy Chester do that on his Firebird race car and end up with a reported 1000bhp then took them presumably because it was too much of a handful! apart fron that, come over and have a look at the shoehorn job under the bonnet of the car it is enough problem fitting a not too elaborate set of headers hence the single exhaust, I will try to post an under bonnet shot later. Andy's car although outwardly the same model was in fact a spaceframe or semi spaceframe special with a totally different front end arrangement, mines stock still with the original fletch panels (standard GM modified McFerson strut design so I need me fletches) but it makes for one tight installation. |

Going off topic slightly, but knowing how resourceful the TRC (should that now be DTRC?) guys are. Can anyone point me in the right direction ( especially at the devils elbow at Lydden and Russels at Snetterton - yeh I know!). Jenvey taper throttle bodies with sooper bellmouths look pretty good on an XE, but no1 cyl throttle body occupies the same space as the servo/master cylinder. I can move the master cyl and servo over to the left hand side, but need the remote linkage as fitted to MK1 Astras and early FWD cavaliers - may be a few mods but no major expertise req'd.
However, everywhere I try ( breakers s/hand spares places etc etc) all say - used to get them in every week - ain't had a mk1 astra in for at least 2 years. Anyone know the wherabouts of any mk1 Astras (or early cavs ) I think some of the early golfs/scirrocos had a similar arrangement, but this would probably involve more work. prefer kent/london but would be prepared to travel or pay additional postage if anyone can put me on the right track. Of corse there'll be a beer in it (Brands Apr 15th) post race of course ! |

from what i've heard and seen alan the only clearnce problem that usually occurs is with one of the brake pipes from the master, you might just have to change a pipe for flexable one to gain clearance

I'll check that Graham - I'm off next week, so i should be bolting it on, plugging in the new management system and changing a couple of oil seals
so I can be sure then. The downside is I've got to show a couple of estate agents round who will be smiling as they tell me why I haven't got a budget next year so I can pay them T******* B******* ( Apologies to any genuine estate agents out there ) |

Sorry for not replying sooner, but in relation to Mr Thurston's comments, my car is actually 1 inch to 25.4mm scale, and has no servo's, just a 403ci motor, started by an old Escort battery that I found under the lid of one of my brother's cars.
It no longer leaks oil as I found that putting three of four Barr-seals in the dry sump tank sorts it out. There was a lot of grinding noises when I ran it up, but they've stopped now. Tomorrow, I'll be ripping my workshop apart to find the raceparts oil gauge and capilliary that I bought over a year ago, and put "somewhere safe". Ohh Crystal - nope, I'm synthesized mate. Got a new Penzoil sythesizer to go in it. Rob. |
