Other than numbers is there a way to tell the 708 and 709 apart?

708 has just retired with a gearbox issue. Good to figure this stuff out now instead of at Le Mans.

709 is currently the fastest car on track with just over 2 hours left. Great stuff!

First of all, two 007s look twice as good as just one.

The Monza pace is very promising. But a brake change in a 6h race, no matter how hot, is not something we're used to seeing. I hope that's sorted before the LM24 race. With a clean run there's a major opportunity for Glickenhaus to steal the big trophy!

While true, if that's its biggest issue, that does not actually rule the car out. It certainly would be a mountain to climb, but not an impossible one.

The 4 laps lost there would be 2 laps at Le Mans. That's a distance you can recover, and recover they would given their pace advantage over P2 if the gap carries over to LM.

The other significant thing emerging is that the GR 010 is not a happy machine. Based on Marshall Pruett and Graham Goodwin's comments recently, and watching the drivers wrestle and miss braking points, as well as some pretty fundamental reliability woes, the Toyota is looking just as vulnerable as the privateer Glickenhaus. If not more so.

Great progress from the car, things are looking up. Hopefully it will be good enough to pick up the pieces if leading cars hit trouble at LM. We'll see, it's certainly good to see the are getting better

It will be tough to beat Toyota. Even if the car is difficult to drive, it's still got the speed and the reliability. So I wouldn't bet on them being beaten yet. We'll see.

You know what's curious? I don't remember hearing a word about those pesky black things. I've only just remembered now tyres being a big talking point in the previous rounds.

James, how happy were you with those Michelins on a faster track? Do you sill expect to have that disadvantage against Toyota on multiple stints at Le Mans?

Badlands99 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Great race guys ......
Jim .... you must be well pleased to be up there with the quickest for some of the race.
Was just willing you on to chase down the Alpine during the middle stint but just wasn't to be.
First proper race with two cars - great result! Could have been better but reckon that it got quite a few people worried.
You have now got the tyres working, now beef the brakes up, get the pit stops a bit more fluid and you are going to scare lots of people at LM!
GREAT RESULT GUYS! WELL DONE!

Monza is light on tyres, but on the other hand I heard that there were degradation issues in the run up to the race.

However looking at the lap times across a stint there didn’t seem to be much tyre deg, or at least, not enough that wasn’t offset by the fuel load reducing.

I am starting to think whether Hypercars will need brake changes at LM, considering their much higher weight compared to LMP1s. Usually, the GTE cars do change them once during the race (exception being last year's winning Aston, but then they had brake issues at the Bahrain race).

I was thinking the same. But you'd expect 1 brake change, not 5 (every 4 hrs). And I suppose weather will factor into that.

Could be an issue for LMDh vs LMH? LMH will recover energy through front wheels, so reducing brake load. LMDh energy recovery is through rears.

But they are considerably heavier nevertheless. So if LMP1-H were even slightly marginal on brakes, LMH may require that change. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't brake changes still common in LMP1 about a decade ago or so?

Not to my recollection. Almost exclusively the province of the GTs.

Tyre deg. didn't seem to be an issue. Difficult to be certain (different drivers, track conditions, SC/FCY), but lap times didn't drop off in a stint/tyre change - at least not enough to win over the fuel burning off.

A good sign. Monza easy on tyres, but Le Mans isn't that bad either (???)

And even more encouraging is a look at the pace over a stint.

Comparing the 7 to the 709.

Best average stint speed (ignoring the first and last lap) was 5th stint for 709. 29 lap stint averaging 1:38.2. The Toyota no.7 was it's 6th stint, 29 laps and 1:37.8.

Only 0.4s behind is pretty good

The Alpine's best was 1:38.5 - 0.3s behind the 709.

My understanding is that Le Mans is way easier on tires than most normal circuits, maybe even than Monza. That's exactly why brought this up. Monza performance should be a lot more indicative than anything we've seen so far.

Toyota seems marginally better on fuel. But who knows if that difference is a lap per stint or just 90% of a lap at Le Mans.

Aren’t integers great! You could be a tiny fraction better than someone else and get an entire lap advantage, or 90% better and not! Or you could be like Frank Biela

I remember many years ago at Road America, when Lance Armstrong's Livestrong foundation (or whatever it was called) did a yearly bike ride around the track during the ALMS weekend, and I participated one year, and before the start a few of the Audi guys showed up to bike it as well, and Frank Biela was at the front on his bike, and what do I notice stuffed in the back of his bike shorts? A pack of cigarettes, lololol
